The Artist featured in March issue of Ebony magazine
Monica Levette Clark reports on March 12th:
The Artist is featured in the new March 99 edition of Ebony. Along with two photos of him, one from Purple Rain and the other was a recent photo. There is an article to go along with the pictures. It gives a brief, yet extensive look back on the last 40 years of his life and an update on his recent work. He looks beautiful as ever, with seductive stare and all. Pick up the latest edition of Ebony and check it out for yourself, you won't be disappointed. The only mishap is they said that The Artist will be turning 40 this year, when actually he will be 41, he was born in 1958. "OOPs"

Picture of The Artist and Larry Graham in latest issue of Rolling Stone
Harold Pride III reports:
A Photo of the Artist and Larry Graham is featured in the "Random Notes" section of the April 1st issue of Rolling Stone. The photo was taken at the GCS2000 release party at NV and contains a brief sidebar of those in attendance.
Fred Shaheen adds:
I just saw the "guitar gods" issue of Rolling Stone, Apr. 1, 1999. There is a brief mention of Larry Graham's new CD and the launch party in Random Notes, with a very nice picture of G and The Artist. Why they neglected to honor The Artist as a "guitar god" is quite puzzling. But, I'm sure when he sees the cover of that magazine - a weird drawing of Jimi holding a guitar and standing on top of a t-bone steak (?!), The Artist will be relieved that he wasn't included :-) On the + tip, they did recognise Joni as a "goddess" tho'.

The Artist featured in April 1999 issue of Yahoo Internet Life magazine
Andre reports on March 16th:
The April issue of Yahoo! Internet Life magazine has a small blurb on The Artist on page 96. The section is called, "A Guide to the Web's Celeb Leaders and Lollygaggers". The Artist appears under the heading, "Five to Watch for 2000". The celebrities in order of appearance in this category are as follows: 1) The Artist; 2) Tori Amos; 3) Marilyn Manson; 4) Cheap Trick; and 5) KISS. The blurb on The Artist mentions the website address of love4oneanother.com and states, "At the stroke of 1999, the Artist unified all of his authorized fan sites into an elegantly designed collective. This is what it sounds like when doves surf."
In a heading just opposite this one is a listing of celebrities who have websites, but they don't provide much in content or vision. This column is called "Five Who Should Be Watching". The celebrities in order of appearance are as follows: 1) Beck; 2) Jewel; 3) Garth Brooks; 4) Mariah Carey; and 5) Madonna.
Additionally, there's an article in the same magazine about David Bowie, who appears on the cover. In his interview (page 92 -96, 132), he mentions The Artist specifically twice.
Page 95
Y-Life: Have you been to the Artist's site?
BOWIE: Yeah. It's good.
Page 96
Y-Life: The diary topics are pretty broad. You write about meeting your wife, or herbal cold remedies. this seems to be an effective way ofr stars to get beyond celebrity, to demystify themselves.
BOWIE: The advent of demystification is very strong. It started inthe late '80's, and it's really coming to the fore now. Musically, there's no particular group or artist coming to the fore, but rather genres: hip-hop, or female singers. That seems to be the sound and the feel of the '90's, rather than a Beatles or a Stones or a Prince. It's not personality-led.
Yahoo! Internet Life magazine has a web sitebut it doesn't seem 2 include the new articles yet.

Come 2 My House "Album of the Week" in Music Week (UK)
Kieron Donoghue reports on March 25th:
In the UK's leading weekly music industry magazine, Music Week, Chaka Khan's
new album is voted album of the week.
Here's the review:
"By the time most artists reach their 20th album they have long lost the
urge to experiment-but not Chaka Khan. For her latest set she eschews some
of the mainstream R&B writers and producers who have stifled her Nineties
work to make something altogether more interesting. While mainly
self-written and produced, her musical collaborators include The Artist
(Prince) and Larry Graham. Although not a mainstream record, Chaka fans will
be happy and there is enough going on to make it well worth other people
checking out. Such is her reputation that promotion already includes TV
appearances on TOTP and the O-Zone, plus radio slots on stations such as
GLR, Radio Two and Capital."

A reader reports from the UK on March 19th:
Chaka Khan appeared on the UK television show This Morning on Friday, March 19th. A very short interview was followed by a (lip sync) performance of Don't Talk 2 Strangers. The interview was somewhat misleading in that Chaka spoke of working with The Artist (whom she said she called Art or Arty!) on Come 2 My House, saying that she normally would write music 1st then add the lyric, but 4 this album she said that The Artist asked her 2 write poetry which he then set 2 music, making it sound as if that had been the case with Don't Talk 2 Strangers. Chaka looked well and happy. She also talked of her love of London, saying that she had owned a house there 4 over 10 years. She added that she hoped 2 b touring the UK in the summer (she did not mention if this would b alone or with The Artist as she did last year).

Chaka Khan on Big Night In (UK TV) on March 17
Simon reports from the UK on March 18th:
Chaka Khan was on the UK channel 5 chat show Melinda's Big Night In last night (Wednesday) hosted by former model Melinda Messenger. She talked about the album Come 2 My House which she said is out March 29th in the UK and was asked:
MM: What was it like working with The Artist?
CK: Like working with myself, we're both very fast, we both rely on our instincts musically, So there wasn't a lot of talking back and forth, just a lot of good work, we actually finished the CD in about 3 weeks time.
MM: People are curious about him, he has his persona of being somebody... quite strange in someways? Is he just a normal guy?
CK: No ! (laughs) Um, he's different, but I think that people misread his shyness for something else, U know, he's just introverted and very shy and um, he's diifferent (pauses) the difference too is he's in the fishbowl, and everyone's looking at him U see, I'm sure there's a lot of weird guys walking around U know, but no-one's looking at them
MM: That's very true, but they happen to be looking at him, which is no reflection of The Artist being weird or anything...
CK: He is a genius though, he's really an artistic genius
MM: That's very true
She also talked about her lengthy career, her staying power ("I did what I had 2 do, had some integrity, And it paid off ."), and was asked about her own line of chocolates "Chakalates they're Called (audience laughs ), for my charity, the Chaka Khan Foundation charity, which addresses women and Children in crisis, it's a way of motivating funds for the foundation", although she said she wasn't a big chocolate person herself (!)
She closed the show with a (lipsync) performance of the first single from the album, Don't talk 2 strangers, which she said was also out March 29th.

I've ordered mine from the Sound Shop chain, but any chain that has imports

After the break, she returned 2 talk with Rosie 4 about 5 minutes. She discussed how she worked with The Artist on Come 2 My House, which was like "working with [her]self", 2 the point that they didn't even need 2 talk. The album was completed over a very short period of time (3 weeks).
She was also asked about when she first met The Artist and recalled jokingly an episode with The Artist impersonating Sly over the phone 2 get her 2 come and see him in the studio.

Chaka Khan on BET Tonight
Eric Benchimol reports:
I just got finished tuning in to BET Tonight and I found a surprise! Chaka
Khan was on tonight (March 4, 1999). I missed the first half hour and
tuned in just to the end of her discussion of Come 2 My House. From what I
gathered, she's signed with BMG to re-release it in the U.S. She said
basically that unfortunately the 'big boys' own the record biz and to get
the album heard, she has to go through them. There was no mention of The
Artist or NPG Records in the final half hour.
Robert Hill also reports:
The show opened with some footage of The Artist, Larry Graham and Chaka when they last appeared together on BET Tonight. Tavis commented that after their appearance, he received tons of "hate" mail; not because of the Artist, but because he didn't allow Chaka more air time. He asked Chaka what was it like working with the Artist. She credited the Artist for reviving her love of music. She said that they worked so well together that it only took 3 weeks to complete "Come 2 My House." Tavis asked her why the cd wasn't being played on the radio. Chaka replied that it was due to a bureaucratic system, where the music from big companies get played before the smaller independents, such as NPG. She recently signed a distribution deal with BMG and she said air play and sales were improving.
That's about all she discussed with regard to The Artist.
Chaka said the next single from Come 2 My House is
"This Crazy Life of Mine."
Radharani One also reports on the appearance:
On March 4th late in the evening, Chaka Khan was on BET with Tavis Smiley during a live show/innerview from the City of Angels. Chaka responded to several phone calls with warmth and love. A salient piece of advice that she gave was for artists to fully understand the music industry and its laws. She even encouraged artists to become lawyers for themselves!

Larry Graham at Bunkers with The Combo
Mayho reports from Minneapolis:
Larry Graham played at Bunkers on March 1st, Monday night.
How lucky I was last night.... I went to Bunker's in downtown Minneapolis to see The Combo (Michael B. and Sonny T. join this band every Monday night.) Around 12:15pm, I noticed that Morris Hayes came inside, Larry and The Artist were sitting on the far back seats in the bar. One of the Combo's vocalists, "Juice" (he is from Greazy Meal) called Larry Graham and said him to come join the band on the stage! Sonny took off the stage for Larry, though they had a technique difficulty at the beginning Larry took Sonny's bass, and asked the crowd what we wanted to hear. Some people just shout, "The Jam!!!!!" Then Larry goes, "so... you know The Jam..... Do you know how to Jam?" The crowd went to crazy!! Then Larry goes, "...well... so... does the band know how to Jam?" All the Combo's members were like, "What are you talking about?! Of Course!!!!" :) So they started "The Jam." His wife, Tina was also on the stage, she was also jamming with the band :) Man... that was another BOMB!!! That was soooo funky last night... I thank God for that I could be there last night..... and also could see The Artist's long hair :)
