End of 1999/Beginning of 2000

The Artist re-records his entire catalog

In an Associated Press story dated April 14th, The Artist announced that he would re-record his entire back catalog of Warner Bros. releases in order 2 b able 2 release them himself independently — much in the same way he re-recorded the song "1999" and released it in late 1998 as an EP under the title 1999 The New Master.

A Yahoo!/Reuters later claimed that The Artist had plans 2 release a 7-CD compilation of re-recorded tracks in the fall of 1999. However, this in4mation was never officially confirmed and might b the result of a confusion with the release of a 7-CD set of samples from his music (see related story).

In his chat with Love4OneAnother on April 19th, Morris Hayes talked about working on the re-recorded tracks and mentioned his work on "Soft & Wet" in particular.

This is all the in4mation we have about these newly planned releases as of July 19th.

NPG Records 2 release a 7-CD set of samples of Prince/The Artist music

As announced earlier this year on this site, NPG Records is going 2 b releasing a 7-CD set of samples documenting The Artist life's work.

Much in the way samplers from James Brown and George Clinton operate, the use of samples from this CD set requires no sample clearing.

The Artist on the cover of Guitar Player

Ernest L Sewell, IV reports:

The Artist is on the cover of the January 2000 issue of Guitar Player. There is a great article about his guitar habits and methods. There are a lot of pictures, covering from circa 1980 - present. All his previous guitars are highlighted. There are a few smaller studio shots from Paisley Park of his guitars and footpetal boards.

Guitar Player has a web site which shows the cover of the magazine.

The photos provided by Steven Parke are incredible! The Artist on next Funkadelic album? Yes, but...

According 2 some reports, The Artist alledgedly has done some work on a track called "Vibe" 4 the next Funkadelic album...

Only problem is, while he did indeed participate, the song title is incorrect. The official word from Paisley Park is that The Artist "has peed on the track called Paradigm", not anything called 'Vibe'... B careful what u read :).

The album is xpected 2 b released later this year.

The Artist and Mayte in... The Economist

Martin Moulton reports:

The Artist & Mayte are pictured in the current issue of the Economist magazine (12/18-30) on page 57. Probably a first. They're not, however, mentioned in the article, "What fun?", one of a series on "The Party Business" . The preceding article in the section is interestingly enough about Saturnalia -- originally an annual Roman religious festival that was beset by consumerism, commercialism, and materialism -- now called "Christmas".

"The Greatest Romance Ever Sold": more on airplay

Eric Benchimol reports on November 28th:

Just an update... it appears 6XFM (106.9 FM, London, Ontario) has added TGRES (Jason Nevins remix) to their playlist rather than the Neptunes remix. They may be playing both, but I'm not sure! Request line is (519) 453-2960 -- all you Canadians with free long distance, help us request it!

Tim Peyton reports on November 18th:

"The Greatest Romance that's ever been sold" (Adam & Eve remix) has been #1 for the past couple of days on Cincinnati, Ohio's only urban radio station, 100.9 WIZF. It took forever and many calls from myself and friends before they even played it after first introducing it. But despite it making #1 on the "Top 9 at 9", they still don't have it in heavy rotation. Will the Artist ever get his props from radio or what? Maybe it's just Cincinnati.

Diva-J reports on November 18th:

There is hope for Pittsburgh, after all! Finally heard TGRES-Adam & Eve remix played on the radio (WAMO) today. It's about time! When I went to hear Chuck D speak last week at SRU he mentioned how great it was working with The Artist, but I think I was the only person in the audience (of about 100) who had heard Undisputed.

LcFunk reports from the UK on November 7th:

'The Greatest Romance Ever Sold', Adam and Eve remix was aired on the Radio 1 R&B chart on saturday as a chartbreaker. They played all except the guitar solo part at the end...

Eric Benchimol reports on November 5th:

Radio commercials for Rave are currently running on radio (I heard one today). Here is a transcript of the commercial (as best as I could manage it):

Also, Toronto fans still need help getting it played on the bigger Top 40 station, Kiss 92. Vote for it at:

joel teague reports on November 4th:

I live in Dallas, TX, and I finally heard the joint single "Greatest Romance Ever Sold" played on one of our stations. They all claim to have just received a copy of the single recently. K104fm was the station I heard it on. they played the Adam and Eve remix.

NPSoul1999 confirms:

After numerous email and telephone requests, K104 in Dallas has finally added The Artist's The Greatest Romance Ever Sold. They are playing the remix with Eve. To request the song go to http://www.k104fm.com and email the program director Skip Cheetam. You can also call (214) 787-1104 or 1-800-817-1104.

npgshy reports from Spain on November 4th:

it is easy 2 hear the new single "TGRES" at any spanish radio station.

RNE-3 is the one and only alternative radio station where U can listen 2 all types of music. they have a late night show "AREA RESERVADA" which is jazz oriented music, and last night they played "TGRES".

early this morning on the 2-hour show "SIGLO XXI" they previewed "Baby Knows" and closed the show with "Undisputed". The Artist is receiving great praise these days about the new music and is often referred 2 as "the mpls purple genius" . according to them the album will B released november 8th in spain.

Norman "Fatboy Slim" Cook 2 remix "Everyday Is A Winding Road"? Only a possibility

On December 20th, the New Musical Express web site published an article alleging that Norman "Fatboy Slim" Cook would remix a track from Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic.

At the present time, however, the only confirmation we have from Arista Records is that Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) is interested in remixing "Everyday is a Winding Road." He naturally wants the blessings of The Artist 2 do this as he thinks it could b a big dance hit.

Stay 2ned.

New Year's Eve show on pay-per-view

A pay-per-view special entitled "Rave Un2 The Year 2000" will b broadcast on Viewer's Choice on December 31st, 1999. The broadcast is xpected 2 start at 10:00 PM ET.

Sarahnpg advises, however:

I just called my local cable company, Adelphia, to order rave Un2 the Joy 2000 on Viewer's Choice. I was informed that the program begins at 9:30pm ET on December 31, 1999. Even though Viewer's Choice is a national company, I would advise everyone to call their local company to order and inquire about the air time in their region.

As anticipated, the show was taped on December 18th at Paisley Park Studios. An anonymous reader provides us with a first report:

The Artist began around 11pm and didn't stop playing until 4am (with a couple long pauses), Lenny Kravitz played "American Woman and "Fly Away" with The Artist and the NPG, Jonny Lang came up and played some guitar. Other guests included George Clinton, Rosie Gaines, Maceo Parker, Larry Graham w/Cynthia and Jerry.

Click here 2 read more reports on the show.

The InDemand web site now has a special page on the 4thcoming event, which lists, among other things, the dates and times on which the program will b repeated throughout January 2000.

NPG Records has also issued a new press release dated December 16th which states that The Artist will retire the song "1999" after this special event.

NPG Records and Viewer's Choice have issued a joint press release about the 4thcoming event. Ruxpen reports that the press release is also available on the Viewer's Choice web site. It is also available on the Pay-Per-View web site.

The show features appearances by other 4mer members of the Family Stone (in addition 2 Larry Graham), Maceo Parker, Mavis Staples and Morris Day and The Time. Lenny Kravitz also jammed on a couple of songs, as did bluesman Jonny Lang. George Clinton appeared as well.

It should also b noted that, according 2 the Rock on TV web site, MTV will broadcast a portion of the pay-per-view event on New Year's Eve.

Although the Canadian Viewer's Choice web site doesn't mention the 4thcoming show yet, the Viewer's Choice Preview Channel in Canada is currently showing a preview of the show (including snippets from "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold" video), which will air on Viewer's Choice in Canada at 10:00 PM on New Year's Eve (and repeat at 1:00 AM).

This is, as far as we know, the only cable or satellite provider outside the USA which will carry the program. We have several reports from Europe stating that local providers will not carry the event. If you have more in4mation on pay-per-view channels in ur own country, please write 2 us.

VH1 auctioned 20 pairs of tickets 2 the Rave Un2 The Year 2000 concert at Paisley Park on December 18. All proceeds went to VH-1's Save The Music charity. U can access an article about the auction.

New Year's Eve live show? Another radio giveaway...

Matthew Hostetler reports on December 6th:

Around 8:30AM ET, Washington, DC radio station WPGC (95.5 FM) finally awarded the grand prize for a promo it had been running for quite some time. In addition to some money, the winner will be flown to see the Artist perform *live* on New Year's Eve. Now, WPGC hadn't been saying where he was going to perform; but this morning deejay Donnie Simpson finally revealed that the concert will be in Minneapolis, presumably at Paisley Park. Simpson admitted that the station itself didn't know until recently where the concert was going to be.

However, Matthew Hostetler adds on December 12th:

I contacted you earlier in the week about the indication that Washington, DC radio station was awarding a listener with a trip to see The Artist perform *live* on New Year's Eve. Well, as I'm sure you saw from the Larry King interview, it appears that The Artist will *not* be performing at Paisley Park live on New Year's Eve. When asked about his concert for the first time, The Artist gestured as if to whisper to King, and it was audible that he said the performance on the 18th of December was to air on PPV Dec. 31st, confirming all the ads about the PPV show. He gave no indication whatsoever that anything was actually going to happen *live* on the 31st. Alas, WPGC seems to be misleading its listeners -- probably including the young lady who won -- by implying that the concert isÊon New Year's Eve. It would seem to me that the winner isÊgoing to the show on the 18th.

And later, Matthew Hostetler adds on December 13th:

One final note on the WPGC promotion -- this morning (12/13/99) the winner came to the station to receiver her winnings, and deejay Donnie Simpson spoke to her briefly about it. Once again, when he spoke of the concert, he spoke as if she were going on New Year's Eve. But she inadvertently confirmed otherwise when she admitted she wasn't even going ! Simpson said something about her trip to see the Artist "rock in the new millennium", then asked her if she had previous New Year's Eve plans before this award. Instead, she let him know that she would be giving the tickets to her parents because her son's birthday is on the 19th..

Again, nothing has been confirmed officially by NPG Records at the present time regarding a live per4mance on New Year's Eve anywhere. The only official in4mation is that a pay-per-view per4mance will b taped at Paisley Park on December 18th and broadcast on New Year's Eve (see above).

The Artist on "The View" (ABC) on December 17th

As anticipated, The Artist appeared on "The View" (ABC) on December 17th.

Mmadsg@aol.com reports:

December 17, 1999 The Artist appears on "The View" 4 a short, but always BUtiful interview. He again says that the New Year's Eve event will probably b the last time U will hear him sing 1999. Morris Day, Lenny Kravitz, Larry Graham & more mentioned 4 the NYE pay-per-view. Will it B The Jam of The Year? Spoke of his "contract" with Mayte. Apparently, the titles, i.e. wife, got in the way of things. Now they R married spiritually, which obviously is a much higher level of marriage. Also spoke of their estate in Spain, NewPowerSoul, where the more un4tunate children of the area can come and play...see the BUtiful side. The Artist has a BUtiful soul and it shines thru in his interview.

The Artist also mentioned that NPG Records would b releasing a "greatest hits" package with re-recorded versions of famous Prince hits some time in the future.

Special on The Artist on December 17th on VIVA 2 (German TV)

As anticipated, VIVA II (a german music broadcaster for "grown-ups") had a special program dedicated 2 The Artist on December 17th.

Frank Hagel reports:

i have just seen the spezial on viva2 today. they broadcast several videos, some older, a live performance of 96 at the paisley park of "get your groove on" and the new one "greatest romance ever sold". The interview was the same like on viva1 at the 11th of december only in other style. That means that you could see The Artist in complete, not only his face. Before the interview he has forbidden for everyone in the studio to smoke and to wear clothes that made of leather or wool. Strange.

During some videos they reported that The Artist is in serious plans of a duet with Beverly Knight. He was asked about a world tour and a possible performance in germany but he did not talk about that, says only that they are in discussions about that.

The Roots, Vernon Reid and others per4m 1999 live in NYC

The Roots, Vernon Reid (4merly of Living Color) and others r among the artists who per4med The Artist's entire 1999 album at a special show in New York City on December 11th.

Eric Benchimol reports on December 13th that the www.vibe.com web site has an article on the event.

CD Now has an article as well and so does Rolling Stone.

PZeller was in attendance and reports:

I attended the 1999 Live: Party at the End of Time Concert held at the Brooklyn Academy of Music this weekend. This was similar to the concert held this summer at Central Park where artists performed Joni Mitchell's Hejira in its entirety. Highlights included Joan Osborne doing a sultry, vampy, torch song version of Little Red Corvette. The house didn't start really moving until Angelique Kidjo, an artist from West Africa did her version of DMSR. She had boomin' vocals and great dance moves (The Artist needs to check her out). N'dea Davenport offered fine vocals on Automatic. Rachid's falsettos reached the upper stratosphere on Something in the Water mimicing Prince's high-pitched screams note for note and then some. PM Dawn contributed a version of Free. Corey Glover from Living Colour got the crowd into it by going to the upper balcony and leading a chant of Taxi during Lady Cab Driver. Bilal had the right seductive vibe on International Lover and fell into a heap on the floor after finishing the song. Toshi Reagaon finished the show with a very bluesy 1999 with acoustic guitar (if you can imagine that) before it turned into an all out funk jam. Vernon Reid on guitar and ?uestlove from The Roots on the drums were superb. The only thing missing was the Artist. Thought he might come because I know he's been in New York recently. Despite each artist putting their stamp on each song, the renditions were all very respectful of the original version. It was a great night overall.

meerteen reports on November 5th:

The Brooklyn Academy of Music has a web site with the basic details on the Party At The End of Time: 1999 Live. (Prince tribute). Here is the URL:

http://www.bam.org/asp/performance.asp?perfID=tonightweregonnapartylikeitsbecauseitis

meerteen adds on November 24th:

A few more artists have been added to the 1999 Prince Tribute at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Toshi Reagon, Joan Osborne and Rachid.

npgshy reports on November 15th that MTV has an article about the event.

The Artist on VIVA 1 (Germany)

As anticipated, The Artist was featured in a special program on German music channel VIVA1 (not 2 b confused with VIVA2) on December 11th at 20:00 local time.

Niels Müller reports on December 12th:

As announced earlier, German TV station VIVA1 showed a one-hour special on The Artist (12-11-99). It featured comments on his career, several old videos and most interesting: the new video of "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold"!!!

The Artist himself described it as a "must see" - and it definitely is! Finally he talked about the "Rave Un2 The Year 2000" event mentioning that The Time, Mavis Staples, George Clinton, Larry Graham and The Family Stone will be performing with him.

Wilke Thomssen also reports:

On 11th Dec.1999. the German TV-station VIVA featured an interview with The Artist. Also shown were a short discography of The Artist and some videos including The Greatest Romance Ever Sold.

The Artist told about his new album, he never was so collaborative before and had usually never invited people in the Paisley Park studios who weren't his best friends. He admires Chuck D.s work as he admires The Artist's, but they had their contracts and their managers keept them apart. But now he has his freedom and can do what he wants.

His new album is based on an agreement and no contract, so he can keep the masters. The Artist mentioned the he has begun to rerecord his old songs.

Cover versions of his songs is a thing The Artist don't like. Thinking of an manager he told one artist to cover Purple Rain makes him sick. As painted art is protected ("I can not paint the Mona Lisa a mustache and say: it's my version"), there should be laws to protect musical art.

The song Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic was recorded in 1988 but The Artist thought is was to futuristic the and put it in the fault. Now is the right time. He said there are some faults that gives him the opportunity to puplish a song when he thinks he should.

When it cames to the bootlegs, The Artist said "Thieves in the Temple". There were some bad poeple in Paisley Park but now this proplem is fixed. He can trust Hans (Hans-Martin Buff) his German sound engineer. Some words from Hans also were shown.

They also mentioned the L4OA website (The Artist: "We agree to agree").

The Artist doesn't see Y2K as a real problem for, just a story from the media ("a pill and a microchip in your neck"). If people are 2000-ready is what counts.

Will there be a party at Paisley Park at the end of 1999?

The Artist: The Time, Mavis Staples, George Clinton, Larry Graham and the Family Stone and me will be together and if they will play I will also play. That's how it's planned.

Ben Skelton also reports:

I thought the presentation by VIVA 1 was extremely good and finally something worth watching (despite the German overdubbing when most of the world uses subtitles!). Fortunately, the man doing the overdubbing spoke far more quickly than The Artist, making it easy to hear most of what our man was saying.

Seeing videos for Count the Days and Thieves in the Temple (short version unfortunately) are rarities that networks such as MTV seem to miss when they devote a whole day to an artist: seeing 1999 and Purple Rain six times in a day instead of the stuff real friends want seems pointless.

Video for TGRES is great - let's pray for some airplay!

Incidently, thought the Larry King interview was really good and 0+> seemed very relaxed to open up on a few topics. It was nice to see mutual respect in the world of media.

The Artist on "Access Hollywood" on December 9th

Eric Benchimol reports on December 10th:

The Artist appeared on Access Hollywood on December 9 in a new, brief interview. The program showed clips of the Arista Rave promo video and played clips of the song "Rave". In the interview, he mentioned that he had a lot of fun recording with the name Prince so he thought he'd get back to that. He also discussed his re-recording of all the old Warner albums and how people would have a choice regarding who they wanted to support, the NPG album or the Warner copy. He said that this New Year's Eve would be the last time he performs the song 1999 (and the host responded with a similar reaction to mine, "Yeah, sure it is..."). They also briefly discussed his marriage annulment to Mayte and referred to her as his "love partner". They said that although the marriage was annulled due to The Artist's disdain for contracts, the two were closer than ever.
