I was flipping through the latest issue of Celebrity magazine, and saw an article on Taylor Dayne where she mentions how The Artist is a big influence on her and how she molded "Unstoppable", one of the songs on her new album Naked Without You, after him. She talks about how she listened to Do Me Baby and Kiss (which she considers to be one of the most perfect pop songs) while writing the song.

Blackstreet and Teddy Riley pay homage 2 The Artist in song
Scott Brooks reports on April 4th:
I just bought and listened to the new Blackstreet album, Finally, and there is a song on there called "Black & White" which is an obvious homage to The Artist. Not only does in have a very Princely sound, it incorporates vocal harmonies that are very reminiscent of songs like "7". The lyrics sound very much as if The Artist had written them himself and even incorporate several of Prince's song titles... Scandalous, The Holy River, and 'Oh' 7, being the obvious three. This is clearly Teddy Riley's attempt to show The Artist that he respects and admires him and looks like a call for a collaboration.
Matthew adds that the song also mentions "3rd Eye" (off The Truth).
Masahiro Isaka also adds on April 12th that Teddy Riley also paid an indirect homage 2 The Artist on the single "Teddy's Jam 2" by his former group Guy (off their 1992 album The Future), in a remix which features his Camille-like accelerated voice naming a series of funky cities, including... Minneapolis :).

I apologize for not remembering the exact issue but it is the most recent issue of Rolling Stone magazine in which guitarist Jeff Beck was asked his favorite 5 songs of all time. #2 was The Artist's "When Doves Cry". Sheena Easton's 1987 album No Sound But A Heart finally gets a US release
Fred Shaheen reports on April 5th:
According to the latest Billboard magazine, Sheena Easton's long-vaulted album, No Sound But A Heart, is finally being issued. This is her 1987 recording to which the Artist contributed one track, "Eternity". It's the same song Chaka Khan did on her '88 CD, C.K. Sheena's version was released as the 1st single from No Sound..., but alas, the album never saw the light of day. Must've been something in the water that year!
The album was actually released in Europe in 1987 (on vinyl, not sure about a CD release), but "Eternity" was only ever released as a single in the US (with a video).

Lisa interview in new Keyboard magazine
Ben Houge reports on April 2nd:
I just got the new Keyboard magazine (May issue), and there's a 2 page interview with Lisa. She says they're probably going to repress the Girl Bros. album under the name 'Wendy & Lisa', since people were going to record stores asking for the new Wendy & Lisa album and it wasn't coming up in record stores' databases. The last few questions in the interview address the possibility of a reunion with "You know who."

The Artist considering re-recording his entire catalog
Michael Allen Holtz/Q102 reports on April 14th:
This came from one of my prep sheets at the radio station.
(New York-AP) - The Artist is considering covering the work of a musician he truly admires: HIMSELF. 0(+> says he will re-record all his old music and sell it on his own. That doesn't mean just the hits, but the entire catalog. He considers it his way of ending his feud with Warner Brothers, which currently owns most of his better-known music. He says the material will sound better when he re-cuts it because technology is better now. He won't say whether he'll do exact renditions or when he'd release the new versions. He's also working on a new studio album, and he's willing 2 try something really radical with that: signing with a major label again 2 release it.
Looks like 1999 is going 2 be a big party!!!!!

Hip-hop reinterpretation of "Soft & Wet"
Alex Finberg reports on April 19th:
Recently while attending an all-independent Hip-Hop show @ San Francisco's Maritime Hall, I was infuriated when the opening act rhymed over a beat I had produced for another Bay Area artist last Summer. I remarked to my brother, "Now I know how The Artist must feel". And humorously enough, headliners, The Coup, backed by a terrific live band, took the stage and opened with a song completely derived from "Soft and Wet", not to mention the DJ was scratching "...thank U 4 a fonkay time.." during the song's conclusion. Normally I would have been irate, but The Coup managed to reinterpret the classic party anthem with politically conscious lyrics and a new "swing" to the formerly rigid rhythm (and dig this, the DJ removed her bra while cuttin' it up on the decks - Never seen that before!!!!). At any rate, I had their new record, Steal This Album, sent to me up here in Washington and the aforementioned song (complete w/ the "Darling Nikki" scratch) is the opening track entitled "The Shipment". Not really my cup of tea but check it out.

Australian artist Baz Luhrmann covers "When Doves Cry"
Eric Benchimol reports on March 30th:
The album by dance artist Baz Luhrmann includes a remake of When Doves Cry. I don't know about worldwide release, but the album was just released this week in Canada. You can check out clips from the album (including When Doves Cry) at www.cdnow.com.
A reader additionally reports that "the 'When Doves Cry' version is the same one that was in 'Romeo & Juliet'. Baz Luhrman was the director of that movie and there r songs on this album from his movies. I don't know his connection 2 the music."
Matt provides us with this additional in4mation:
Hi! I'm from Australia, where Baz Luhrman is a major icon in film making and I know his connection to When Doves Cry. Baz is a talented Australian Film Director but he also has a knack for remixing other people's songs, and creating his own. Apparently, he included When Doves Cry in Romeo & Juliet because of the lyrical content relating to the movie at hand, but he says he can just "hear" music. The remix is how he "heard" the song. He then describes this to the musicians and they refine the music until it sounds the way he was thinking. Baz has major control over the music used in his films.

In the May '99 issue of Marie Claire Magazine, this month's Star Watch, What I Did For Love, there is a nice picture of the Artist and Mayte. It has a small notation discussing the recent annulment they took. It says:
"In a particularly unconventional gesture, the artist formerly known as Prince announced the annulment of his marriage to Mayte Garcia. He told the press: 'Mayte and I are joined for life, and the best way to demonstrate it is to do away with the legal bonds that people demand.'"
The article also features other celebrities that are more "theatrical" than most when it comes to declaring their love.

The Artist-themed spring show at Californian high school
Daisy reports on April 15th:
At Etiwanda High School in California there was a spring dance show put on by their dance team which featured a dance by a choreographer on the dance team, Monica Clark. The music she used was none other than "Jam of the Year," off of the Artist's Emancipation album. The production featured about 10 dancers and they were costumed in party attire, which she used as the theme of the song. It made me want to dance. She could be somebody big one day!

The 1999 Edition of the Essence Awards has an 'NPG' flavor :)
A reader reports on April 13th:
This year's Essence Awards has a special ring to it...
"1999 Essence Awards - Power of the New Generation"
This year's honorees are Grammy Award winning Singer/Hip-Hop Artist/Song Writer/Producer Lauryn Hill. Kirk Franklin, re-inventor of the new gospel missionaries called the hip-hop Christian music industry. Chris Rock a true comedian barnone, even when the hour is rushed. FUBU "For Us By Us" four young black men from Queens, NY making a killing on the urban fashion scene(grossing 900 million dollars in 1998) and Hydeia Broadbent a teenager living with HIV. "This teenager takes AIDS to the public---and to our Hearts", Ms. Jennifer Lindsey. Ms. Lindsey was a child labeled 'brain-damaged' but proved to be a prodigy. At age 3 she was reading on a second grade level and at age 5 playing the violin.
With this line up of honorees it is no wonder why they are calling this year's awards ceremony as said on page 103 of the magazine in a AT&T ad "The New Power Generation: Defining the New Millennium"...sound like a line from 1999 the New Master to me, but who am I to say. No doubt The Artist might be in attendance again, so far since 1996's awards he has and I would not be surprised at seeing him there again.
The Essence Awards ceremony is scheduled 2 take place on April 30th, 1999.
