Buy 1, no as a matter of fact U better buy 2.

Tom reports on April 9th:

I was flipping through the latest issue of Celebrity magazine, and saw an article on Taylor Dayne where she mentions how The Artist is a big influence on her and how she molded "Unstoppable", one of the songs on her new album Naked Without You, after him. She talks about how she listened to Do Me Baby and Kiss (which she considers to be one of the most perfect pop songs) while writing the song.

Blackstreet and Teddy Riley pay homage 2 The Artist in song

Scott Brooks reports on April 4th:

I just bought and listened to the new Blackstreet album, Finally, and there is a song on there called "Black & White" which is an obvious homage to The Artist. Not only does in have a very Princely sound, it incorporates vocal harmonies that are very reminiscent of songs like "7". The lyrics sound very much as if The Artist had written them himself and even incorporate several of Prince's song titles... Scandalous, The Holy River, and 'Oh' 7, being the obvious three. This is clearly Teddy Riley's attempt to show The Artist that he respects and admires him and looks like a call for a collaboration.

Matthew adds that the song also mentions "3rd Eye" (off The Truth).

Masahiro Isaka also adds on April 12th that Teddy Riley also paid an indirect homage 2 The Artist on the single "Teddy's Jam 2" by his former group Guy (off their 1992 album The Future), in a remix which features his Camille-like accelerated voice naming a series of funky cities, including... Minneapolis :).

I apologize for not remembering the exact issue but it is the most recent issue of Rolling Stone magazine in which guitarist Jeff Beck was asked his favorite 5 songs of all time. #2 was The Artist's "When Doves Cry". Sheena Easton's 1987 album No Sound But A Heart finally gets a US release

Fred Shaheen reports on April 5th:

According to the latest Billboard magazine, Sheena Easton's long-vaulted album, No Sound But A Heart, is finally being issued. This is her 1987 recording to which the Artist contributed one track, "Eternity". It's the same song Chaka Khan did on her '88 CD, C.K. Sheena's version was released as the 1st single from No Sound..., but alas, the album never saw the light of day. Must've been something in the water that year!

The album was actually released in Europe in 1987 (on vinyl, not sure about a CD release), but "Eternity" was only ever released as a single in the US (with a video).

Lisa interview in new Keyboard magazine

Ben Houge reports on April 2nd:

I just got the new Keyboard magazine (May issue), and there's a 2 page interview with Lisa. She says they're probably going to repress the Girl Bros. album under the name 'Wendy & Lisa', since people were going to record stores asking for the new Wendy & Lisa album and it wasn't coming up in record stores' databases. The last few questions in the interview address the possibility of a reunion with "You know who."

The Artist considering re-recording his entire catalog

Michael Allen Holtz/Q102 reports on April 14th:

This came from one of my prep sheets at the radio station.

(New York-AP) - The Artist is considering covering the work of a musician he truly admires: HIMSELF. 0(+> says he will re-record all his old music and sell it on his own. That doesn't mean just the hits, but the entire catalog. He considers it his way of ending his feud with Warner Brothers, which currently owns most of his better-known music. He says the material will sound better when he re-cuts it because technology is better now. He won't say whether he'll do exact renditions or when he'd release the new versions. He's also working on a new studio album, and he's willing 2 try something really radical with that: signing with a major label again 2 release it.

Looks like 1999 is going 2 be a big party!!!!!

Hip-hop reinterpretation of "Soft & Wet"

Alex Finberg reports on April 19th:

Recently while attending an all-independent Hip-Hop show @ San Francisco's Maritime Hall, I was infuriated when the opening act rhymed over a beat I had produced for another Bay Area artist last Summer. I remarked to my brother, "Now I know how The Artist must feel". And humorously enough, headliners, The Coup, backed by a terrific live band, took the stage and opened with a song completely derived from "Soft and Wet", not to mention the DJ was scratching "...thank U 4 a fonkay time.." during the song's conclusion. Normally I would have been irate, but The Coup managed to reinterpret the classic party anthem with politically conscious lyrics and a new "swing" to the formerly rigid rhythm (and dig this, the DJ removed her bra while cuttin' it up on the decks - Never seen that before!!!!). At any rate, I had their new record, Steal This Album, sent to me up here in Washington and the aforementioned song (complete w/ the "Darling Nikki" scratch) is the opening track entitled "The Shipment". Not really my cup of tea but check it out.

Australian artist Baz Luhrmann covers "When Doves Cry"

Eric Benchimol reports on March 30th:

The album by dance artist Baz Luhrmann includes a remake of When Doves Cry. I don't know about worldwide release, but the album was just released this week in Canada. You can check out clips from the album (including When Doves Cry) at www.cdnow.com.

A reader additionally reports that "the 'When Doves Cry' version is the same one that was in 'Romeo & Juliet'. Baz Luhrman was the director of that movie and there r songs on this album from his movies. I don't know his connection 2 the music."

Matt provides us with this additional in4mation:

Hi! I'm from Australia, where Baz Luhrman is a major icon in film making and I know his connection to When Doves Cry. Baz is a talented Australian Film Director but he also has a knack for remixing other people's songs, and creating his own. Apparently, he included When Doves Cry in Romeo & Juliet because of the lyrical content relating to the movie at hand, but he says he can just "hear" music. The remix is how he "heard" the song. He then describes this to the musicians and they refine the music until it sounds the way he was thinking. Baz has major control over the music used in his films.

Melanie McKinney reports on April 15th:

In the May '99 issue of Marie Claire Magazine, this month's Star Watch, What I Did For Love, there is a nice picture of the Artist and Mayte. It has a small notation discussing the recent annulment they took. It says:

"In a particularly unconventional gesture, the artist formerly known as Prince announced the annulment of his marriage to Mayte Garcia. He told the press: 'Mayte and I are joined for life, and the best way to demonstrate it is to do away with the legal bonds that people demand.'"

The article also features other celebrities that are more "theatrical" than most when it comes to declaring their love.

The Artist-themed spring show at Californian high school

Daisy reports on April 15th:

At Etiwanda High School in California there was a spring dance show put on by their dance team which featured a dance by a choreographer on the dance team, Monica Clark. The music she used was none other than "Jam of the Year," off of the Artist's Emancipation album. The production featured about 10 dancers and they were costumed in party attire, which she used as the theme of the song. It made me want to dance. She could be somebody big one day!

The 1999 Edition of the Essence Awards has an 'NPG' flavor :)

A reader reports on April 13th:

This year's Essence Awards has a special ring to it...

"1999 Essence Awards - Power of the New Generation"

This year's honorees are Grammy Award winning Singer/Hip-Hop Artist/Song Writer/Producer Lauryn Hill. Kirk Franklin, re-inventor of the new gospel missionaries called the hip-hop Christian music industry. Chris Rock a true comedian barnone, even when the hour is rushed. FUBU "For Us By Us" four young black men from Queens, NY making a killing on the urban fashion scene(grossing 900 million dollars in 1998) and Hydeia Broadbent a teenager living with HIV. "This teenager takes AIDS to the public---and to our Hearts", Ms. Jennifer Lindsey. Ms. Lindsey was a child labeled 'brain-damaged' but proved to be a prodigy. At age 3 she was reading on a second grade level and at age 5 playing the violin.

With this line up of honorees it is no wonder why they are calling this year's awards ceremony as said on page 103 of the magazine in a AT&T ad "The New Power Generation: Defining the New Millennium"...sound like a line from 1999 the New Master to me, but who am I to say. No doubt The Artist might be in attendance again, so far since 1996's awards he has and I would not be surprised at seeing him there again.

The Essence Awards ceremony is scheduled 2 take place on April 30th, 1999.

Chaka Khan live in Trondheim, Norway

Ingebjørn Røren reported on March 20th that "Olavshallen" in the city of Trondheim, Norway presented Chaka Khan on April 25th.

Rune Vanvik was in attendance and reports on April 26th:

Here's a very brief report from yesterdays Chaka Khan concert in Trondheim. The concert was great except the rather poor sound quality during the first two songs. After correcting that problem Chaka asked people to come closer to the stage, due to rather poor ticket sales (only half or so of the tickets were sold). She seemed to enjoy herself, and made a few funny remarks to people in the front. She played a variety of song, from 'don't talk 2 strangers' and 'spoon' to 'I feel 4 u', 'I'm every woman' and other songs from the Rufus period. As for the band, they were really giving up the funk. The drummer worked his set ho hard he broke a stick. The concert was really great, and I feel sorry for those who missed it. To bad Chaka didn't come to a full house, I think she deserve that. That didn't seem to put a damper on her or the crowds spirit though, and at one point the crowd was so into her music that the floor actually moved... Hopefully she'll get a bigger audience in Oslo tonight.

Play inspired by The Artist in San Francisco

April-Chelsea Mosley reports:

There is going to be a play April 19 at Theater Artaud in San Francisco that was called A Prince, One Witch and a Jew. However the director of the theater, Judy Nemziff, had the playwrite change the name to An evening of African American Women Poets because she thought the title might offend some. The playright explained that the entire evening was about Love and in the name of Love finally relented to the wishes of the theater director. The original title A Prince, One Witch and a Jew is based on a poem and a short story about The Artist, Madonna, and Steven Spielberg. Although the title has changed, the poem and short story (which I have heard is hilarious with lol) will still be presented on April 19. The theater has a website www.theaterartaud.org. Check it out!

April-Chelsea Mosley also reports:

The April 19th play inspired by the Artist is getting lots of attention. Here's the real. Parts of the poem and short story were actually written over 14 years ago when the playwrite was 11! In the playrights words "I thought I was the only one to see the connection between these two." Then two things happened to convince the playwrite to pull it out of the archives, update it a little and shop it around as book material. The first was a July 1998 article in Rolling Stone magazine where Madonna mentions "When Doves Cry" as one of her favorite songs. The second was the recent open letter to Madonna from the Artist. Then fate stepped in and Theater Artaud decided to give a series of Monday nights to up and coming local artists. The opportunity to present this musical comedy live was not one to pass up. The playright is desperately working to put the finishing touches on a webpage that will be up in March.

On April 6th, April-Chelsea Mosley provides us with the following update:

The April 19th play inspired by the Artist is in full swing. It seems that three other theaters in San Francisco, including ODC, The African Cultural Center, and Lorraine Hansberry, have all expressed interests in having the 7 ladies perform in their space. The Playright hopes that the offer will still be open after she opens up a can of truth on the audience. The commentary on modern day Slave Trade Economics is informative, yet hearing such words of truth and power coming from someone so small (5'2" to be exact) is amusing to some. The story of "Little Ramses" homebirth, unassisted by doctors, or even a midwife is hilarious but also insightful into the future of birth. The ladies are on a budget and since they are not in Hollywood, but Hollyweird, the play isn't their first or only job. They do everything from instruct aerobics to massage therapy, and even though the playwrites computer was stolen, she still managed to put up the website. Just like life, economic status can determine where you are on the internet, so look for this site in the ghetto.

www.geocities.com/Broadway/Alley/8287

The playrights friend Kevin, who happens to be an internet service provider is still trying to iron out the kinks, so check on it everyday, be patient, and on April 19th come and hear some stories about LOVE, and some TRUTH!!! Theater Artaud 450 Florida Street, San Francisco, CA 94110 - Monday April 19th 7pm

Finally, April Mosley provides us with a last update on April 14th:

I would like to extend a warm invitation to the Bay Area Friends of the Artist, to my event on April 19. The ladies and I are treating it as a dress rehearsal, for the second show on May 7th 1999 at 8pm in the Buriel Clay Memorial Theater at the African Cultural Center 762 Fulton Street, 1st Floor. Hope to see you there!

"I Wanna B A VJ"... and interview The Artist :)

Melanie McKinney reports on April 17th:

I was watching I Wanna Be a VJ Too last night on MTV. They were interviewing some finalists. They asked Omar which artist he would like to interview--well duh, he said none other than the man, the Artist! They all agreed that the Artist is the "holy grail" of interviews.

Another thing, lately I have been watching alot of MTV (unusual 4 me) I have noticed several times that when the hosts r talking/interivewing, they play Come On in the background! If they can play the song, why can't they show the video? Give it up already!

Michael Allen Holtz/Q102 reports on April 12th:

I went 2 a dance competition this weekend at Bloomington Jefferson High School in MPLS. A junior high dance team whore purple suits with the 0(+> symbol on the front in gold. They were really funky and they did their performance 2 a medley of his songs like: Trust, Thunder, Baby I'm A Star, Now, and Batman 2 name a few. It's cool 2 see that the younger generation is still hip 2 the music. Plus, they received the Platinum Award. The was the highest!

Ginuwine mentions The Artist in interview

Eric Benchimol reports on April 8th:

Genuwine was interviewed by the Global Television Network for Global News Entertainment. The interview, which was aired on April 8, 1999, he mentioned that Prince and Michael Jackson were "two of (his) favourite artists". He said "I always watch them and try to (emulate) what they do." He was referring mostly to his live performance act which was heralded as one of the best in current R&B music. A clip was shown of The Artist from the Emancipation Day concert in which he was singing Purple Rain.

As well, Andrew Goodale reports on April 9th:

Ginuwine has given another interview where he mentions The Artist. This month's issue of the Sony Music Entertainment magazine 'Freebase' (which is avavailable in the UK by returning the postcard with a Sony Artists cd), has the interview. The following are the questions and answers that mentioned The Artist :

FREEBASE : So who are your heroes? Who inspired you, like, as you were growing up?

GINUWINE : Michael Jackson, of course... The Artist, and probably New Edition.

FREEBASE : Do you also plan to work with any one else when it comes to duets? If you had your own way who would you like to do a duet with and why?

GINUWINE : Proabably Michael Jackson, that would be the only one, off hand that i could think of.

FREEBASE : What about The Artist?

GINUWINE : Yeah! I would like to do a song with him, I would love for him to write a song for me or produce a song for me. Not to do a duet as afar as singing with me, but... The Artist, I would like for him to produce a song for me, Michael I would actually like to do a duet with.

The rest of the interview is about working with Timbaland and the rest of his new album 100% Ginuwine.

Busta Rhymes collaboration with The Artist: not this time :)

Daniel reports on April 11th:

On Friday 9th of April Jo Whiley interviewed Busta Rhymes on BBC Radio 1. Amongst other things in a very amusing and interesting interview, they discussed the rumoured collaboration with The Artist and Busta.

A listener asked what had happened to the rumoured get together and Busta replied that it had not happened as The Artist had had to get the song finished before an upcoming tour, and that they're busy schedules had not allowed them to get together in time. (One wonders what tour this was, could it be something forthcoming?) Busta said that he hoped that something could happen in the future.

Jo said that she would love to see Busta and The Artist on stage together. Busta replied "Yeah, just imagine the costumes!".

On another point.....

I happened to be in Camden, London last night and passed the old NPG Store. It is now a women's clothing store, but I was interested to see when I looked through the front window, that many of the old fixtures are still in place, in particular the 0+> carved stair case going down to the basement!

Come 2 My House 2 b released in the UK

Chaka Khan's album with NPG Records, Come 2 My House, was released locally in the UK on April 5th, 1999.

Nick Palmer reports from the UK on April 7th:

I've just been having a quick look on the net and found that Chaka Khan's Come 2 My House can be ordered in the UK via the internet from IMV mail order for £7.99 (plus postage and packing).

This is the address to access this site - http://www.musicshop.co.uk/.

Ben provides us with the following correction on April 10th:

Hi. Just like to say Come 2 My House was released on Friday 26th March and not April 5th as stated. I bought my copy on April 2nd from Virgin. The price quoted from IMVS that said it was £7.99 was incorrect...that is the single. The price is actually £11.49. I bought it for £13.99 in the shops.

There r indeed 2 items listed on this web site with 2 different catalog numbers, but they r both listed as albums, not singles, and we r not aware of a commercial single release at the present time. Click here and here 2 view 2 the 2 different items.

Nick Palmer adds on April 12th that "new and advanced releases often get a price reduction on this web page, so it is possible that this is why there are 2 list prices for this album here. If in doubt it would probably be a plan to phone (01235 862031) or send them an e-mail (support@musicshop.co.uk) to confirm this..."

The review that MusicShop gave the album is as follows:

Chaka Khan - 'Come To My House'
Rather than throw herself in a new direction so as to surprise her fanbase or to keep herself believing she is fresh, Chaka has been rather impressive and built on the foundations that she created all those years ago. Her early work has been adapted and sampled and redone by most mainstream artists of late, she has outshone them by being both original and progressive. A great album for new and old fans alike.

Matt Sephton reports on March 23rd that BMG UK's "Backstage" web site has a special page devoted 2 the 4thcoming release. Click here 2 access the page directly. (U might have 2 register 1st, which is free.)

Tim Page reports that the DotMusic web site has a preview of the 4thcoming release. Click here 2 access the DotMusic article directly.

Tim also says that he "received a promotional postcard from BMG advertising Come 2 My House."
