Van Gogh CD

The Van Gogh CD by the group Van Gogh, which includes an xclusive track given by The Artist entitled "Van Gogh," can now be be ordered through the Muscular Distrophy Family Foundation Click here 2 access the order page directly.

IMPORTANT: As usual, the traditional media is pretty much ignoring this release, because they are more interested in reporting on the bad that's happening than on the good that's being accomplished out there...

In order 2 counter that with our modest means, eye suggest we all go 2 the World Charts web site and vote 4 Van Gogh by filling out the appropriate 4ms ("Van Gogh" is both the name of the group and the title of the new album). Please vote if u haven't done so yet! It would most certainly help promote their cause and eye'm sure that 2gether we can make a difference.

More in4mation on Van Gogh is available on the Van Gogh web site, including a funky audio xcerpt of the Artist-written track.

A portion of the proceeds will go 2 the Muscular Distrophy Family Foundation and 2 the Love 4 One Another Charities.

Laurent R. reports that he has received confirmation from the staff of the 'M6' French TV station that they had bought the rights 2 about 60 minutes of live concert recordings (presumably from the Paris, August 21st, 1998 show) and that they would broadcast these xcerpts 'very soon'. In addition, mpls adds that he has several friends working at M6 and they confirmed that the show will not be broadcast on that channel. There is a rumour, however, regarding a possible broadcast on Canal +, another (private) French channel.

Dez Dickerson nominated 4 Nashville award

Maria Ellicott reports on an AOL news item:

At a press conference hosted by Kathy Mattea and Jars of Clay, the nominees for the Fifth Annual Nashville Music Awards were announced last week. The awards honor the musical achievements of artists and other musical professionals who call Nashville home. Receiving a nomination for "Best Pop Album of The Year", was Dez Dickerson for his "oneman" album. Nominees in various categories included Garth Brooks, Vince Gill, Michael W. Smith, Faith Hill, BeBe & CeCe Winans, and others.

Dickerson, who is best known as "the guy with the kamikazee headband" in Prince's "1999" and "Little Red Corvette" videos released his solo album (which featured guest appearances by The Rembrandts' Phil Solem, and former Prince drummer, Michael Bland) on Absolute Records. "It's rather ironic receiving a 1999 Nashville Music Award nomination, considering my association with the song "1999." I'm honored to be included in such stellar company."

The 1999 Nashville Music Awards will be held at TPAC's Andrew Jackson Hall on Wednesday, February 10th, 1999.

For more information about Dickerson, please contact Jeni Waldrop at (615)661-6012, (615)661-0989 fax, or absobiz.com.

"Kiss" in Q magazine's Top 100 singles of all time

Daniel Stokes reports:

Just brought the latest issue of Q magazine (Feb '99).

In their "The 100 Greatest Singles of All Time" as voted by the magazine readers, "Kiss" came in at number 80:

"Prince had already hinted at his pioneering, experimental production approach to the pop single with "When Doves Cry". But amidst the canyon-proportioned records of the '80s, the falsetto voiced "Kiss" sounded tiny yet somehow incredible. Driven by distorted beatbox and wristy funk guitar, with this single alone Prince proved computer technology can swing as well as the JBs ever did and, in the process, patented the soul and R&B; of the '90s"

Best bit: (2.08) Prince: "Aah-uh think I wanna dance." Snare drum: "Doof."

Where to get it now: The Hits 1.

You said: "So good even Tom Jones couldn't fuck it up." Julie Hatton, Twickenham.

Mike Scott's homage to Prince "The Whole of The Moon" came in at number one hundred. The top ten was:

1. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
2. Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forerver - The Beatles
3. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
4. Imagine - John Lennon
5. Hey Jude - The Beatles
6. Live Forever - Oasis
7. Losing My Relegion - REM
8. Wonderwall - Oasis
9. Bittersweet Symphony - The Verve
10. Fools Gold/What The World Is Waiting For - The Stone Roses.

One of the best issues of the magazine in ages, suggest you check it out!!

"1999": article in Toronto Star (Canada)

Gurdip Matharu reports from Toronto, Canada:

The paper The Toronto Star did an article on '1999'. Dated December 31st 1998. Written by Betsy Powell (Pop Music Critic).

The main points focused on the article were:

- 1999 would be people's favourite song to ring in the New Year, rivaling the song Auld Lang Syne.

- MuchMusic, Canada's music video station was planning to broadcast the video shortly after midnight.

- Touched on how the song rose to No. 12 on Billboard's singles chart in 1983.

- Talked about how Warner re-released it on their label as a single in the States and now Canada. As well, 1999 will be released on a greatest hits package (I'm not sure what package because they didn't mention anything).

- Mentions 1999: The New Master. How The Artist will release seven new mixes of 1999 on his New Power Generation label, sometime in January. Also, he must also alter the song because Warner Bros. owns the rights to the original version.

- Touched about how The Artist was going to celebrate 1999 the new EP at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas on Friday January 1st and Saturday January 2nd 1999.

"1999" in commercials?

Curtis Blount reports on December 29th that, "while driving home from work last nite, eye heard a commercial 4 Gary Barbella Dodge in Philadelphia, PA using the music of '1999'. The commercial was played on Philly 103.9. Out of curiosity eye called them 2 ask how they got permission 2 use the song. eye was told that it was negotiated through their ad agency and that as long as they didn't use the words 2 the song, they were okay. This doesn't sound right 2 me. Do u know if permission has been granted yet 4 anyone 2 use the song?"

Cephas xplains:

If eye'm not mistaken, people can use the song "1999" without using the words because they may be using a cover version of the song. Cover versions are a lot cheaper 2 use in advertising than the original version which would edemand a heavier price. (Such as the rumoured million dollars per use of Prince's song. Just last nite eye was searching 4 cover versions and found several on various CD collections - including an "intro" and "outro" version covered by Dr. Fink no less! So, an advertiser could just get a hold of the legal offices of some company that produced the cover version and get the song 4 cheaper. eye'm sure WB still gets a few dollars out of the deal, but not nearly the same they would get 4 the original!

Steve also reports on December 31st, 1998:

Here in New Zealand Sky Television (pay per view) are using the actual Prince version of the song "1999" to advertise their movies and other programs for 1999. Is this legal? - I've heard the rights to this song would cost big bucks - hopes somebody makes sure they've actually paid up and aren't using the song illegally.

Matt Conrad also notes:

A prominent Indianapolis nightspot was using a snippet (the chorus, to be precise) of the original '1999' in radio advertisements for their recent New Year's Eve party. I suspect that smaller businesses are using the song in locally-run commercials simply because they'll most likely get away with it.

Marlin Martinez also notes:

there is a local car dealership here in south jersey which is using the original "1999", but they are overdubbing the lyrics with something like, "you'll only pay 1999." it is the first in what i am sure will be a barrage of cheesy ads using the song.

In the same vein, BBC News Online has an article about people betting that "1999" will top the charts some time in 1999.

Simon Quinn reports on December 28th that he "saw an ad in a national newspaper in the UK yesterday advertising 'the single of the year : Prince -1999, available from 2morrow' , i.e. 2day." Sean Payne initially reported that the original '1999' was 2 be released in the UK on 28th Dec 98 as published by music stores HMV, Virgin Megastore and Our Price. However, Antony Golding now reports that "HMV UK is now advertising the release date of the Warner Bros 1999 single as 21st December 1998 and not 28th December as was recently posted." Avipaul Bhandari adds that he also "heard on Radio 1 that Warner Brothers are releasing the single on December 28th in the UK. This was confirmed when eye went 2 www.cdparadise.com and did a search 4 '1999'. The result came up with 'New' CD single."

The release date in Holland was originally set by Warner Brothers 2 December 28th 1998, but Somebody reports that, since most offices will be closed during that period, the single has already been released as of December 17th.

The single "1999" was re-released by Warners in Australia on 3 December. They also re-released The Hits Volume 1, which contains "1999".

"1999" getting airplay all over the world

The song "1999" was of course played all over the world on New Year's Eve and we don't have enough room here 2 report on each time and place where it was played. :) We'll just note a few xamples below.

Steven Okrent reports:

The NBC Nightly News played excerpts from "1999" (the original) 3 different times during its January 1, 1999 broadcast. Brian Williams, the evening's anchor, commented that one "better get used to hearing that song" during the coming year.

mpls reports:

In France, the top radio station NRJ play a little bit of 1999 song, in their commercials and jingles for the new year. U can hear the song and some french people who tell their special wishes for this year !

A lot of bars and pubs play it too !!! peace 1999 will be Furiously FONKY

Matt Sephton reports:

A couple of radio stations in NW England were using 1999 as the basis for competitions to win 1999 GBP, which ended on New Years Eve.

Kit reports:

Interestingly enough a local radio station out of Seattle Wa called KUBE played 1999 continuosly from 12am Jan 1st to 10pm. At least this is my understanding due to the fact that I had not tuned in till 5pm Jan 1st. As I listened they had a contestant who had been caller 1999 who had won a trip around the world to "Party like it's 1999." Including seeing The Artist.

TineTime reports:

For New Years one of our local radio stations, Z-104 FM, played "1999" 104 times, straight after which they gave away a compact stereo system and cds to the tenth caller.

Lee reports:

A few minutes into the New Year, I scanned the FM dial and heard "1999" being played on 5 different Philadelphia radio stations simultaneously :-)

Jenny Stridh reports:

At 00.00, January 1st, a radio station in Sweden, mainly Stockholm, previously known as Bandit, at 105,5 fm, was terminated, to be replaced with a brand new one on Monday, January 4th. In the meantime, however, this station plays "1999" over and over again. Great, huh!

Jeff Musick reports:

Just wanted to let everyone know that we definitely partied like it was "1999" in Atlanta last night!!! At the city's biggest New Year's Eve party at Underground Atlanta, the Artist's classic party anthem rocked the house at the stroke of midnight. The crowd ( of several thousand) sang and danced along like I've never witnessed here before! Even the local news reporters couldn't contain themselves--the groove and energy was just too funky! You "coulda sworn it was judgement day--the sky was all purple" (from the awesome fireworks), and "there were people running(no dancing) everywhere." But like all good things it eventually came to an end "cause parties weren't made 2 last."

Gurdip Matharu reports:

The Canadian radio station "The Mix 99.9" was playing commercials with 1999 in promoting their station, they called the advertisement "The Mix 199.9".

Also, after 12:00 AM on January 1st, 1999, the Canadian Video Station "Much Music", aired the video 1999.

Chris Webb reports:

The British TV channel BBC ONE had a new year's eve show broadcasted from Edinburgh in Scotland, and it finished off with Sarah Brightman singing 1999 with bagpipes in the background. It was terrible, and was best avoided at all costs.

Avipaul Bhandari reports:

We were having a house party on New Years Eve (UK).

Radio 1 played a house remix of 1999 at 12am, and Capital Radio played the original version.

Jeanne Davis reports:

I was at a Patti Smith concert at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC that night and it was played and danced to righteously.
