BBC Radio recently broadcast a two part special
on the career of Sting.
During a piece on the Soul Cages Sting
spoke about his writer's block:
The Soul Cages was an
intensly personal and serious album which broke the
curse of STing's
writer's block.
"Its almost endemic or being a writer that
you simply cannot be on output
all the time. But if you think you
should be creating all the time, then
forget it. You can't be, unless
you are Prince [sic] (laughs). Us normal human
beings
need to spend the fallow time, taking in experiences, process
them
and then come out with something
coherent."

The Artist 2 appear on "Op
Reis" (Dutch TV)
The Artist's appearance on the Dutch TV
talk show "Op Reis" hosted by Ivo Niehe was taped on November
28th.
Theo
Noë reports:
I just returned from the perfomance at 'Ivo Niehe
TV show'. He played 'Baby knows'(mostly live) and TGRES(mostly sync)
and wore the red-riding-hood outfit with cap. They told us there
wouldn't B an innerview 'cause he suffers a headache, but I guess he
couldn't resist us, chanting 'Talk 2 us'. So he returned and spoke
2gether with Larry about time, spirituality and
freedom.
Auke Riemersma
adds:
I just came
back from the recordings of the dutch 'tv show', which is the name of
the program. The artist performed there and played two songs, 'the
greatest romance' and I think 'baby knows'. I don't know the new
album that well. He did a small interview, together with Larry
Graham, who talked more than the artist. The show was very good,
although it was only 2
songs.
J.W. van de Kamp
adds:
The Artist
was having a headache and wanted only to perform 2 songs and no
interview. 200 fans were allowed to see the Artist perform Baby Knows
& The Greatest Romance. It was a stunning performance. The audience
were cheering loud and after the performance they were shouting TALK
TO US. There was no sign of the Artist turning back to talk so the
people started to leave the studio but then everybody had to go back.
Then it happened:A interview with the Artist and Larry Graham. It was
a relaxed interview with Larry & The Artist. Afterwards Larry told me
about the tourplans. There are no dates scheldulded yet but he will
perform with the Artist around the world
soon.
The show as xpected 2 air

O(+>
performed 'Baby Knows' and 'The Greatest Romance Ever Sold', before

Performances were cool...but instruments were
not live, and he did lip-synch TGRES. However, he seemed pretty calm
between per4mances, even pointing at a member of the audience and
shouting 'nose picker!'...
Questions were thrown at him by
audience about Roadhouse Garden..The Artist played his usual comic
self, saying nothing in return and grinning...
His face did
seem 2 perk up when 'The War' was mentioned however... :) The guy in
front of me (and his entourage of regulars) joked that O(+> should

Larry was happy and friendly, shaking hands and chatting

The
Time in Ft. Lauderdale
Morris and the Time played the Broward
Center for Performing Arts on
Friday November 19th in Ft.
Lauderdale.
Joel
Martin McTague reports:
Just like to take a second a give a review of the
Time concert in Ft.
Lauderdale, Fl, on 11/19/99:
Though the
concert was billed to start at 8, it was a charity benefit show
so
other local performers took the stage for about 2 hours. Then, after
a
1/2 hour equipment delay, the Time finally took the stage. The
only
members I recognized was Morris Day, Jerome Benton, Jellybean
Johnson and
Monte Moir. There were three other
members.
The set list was (in the order I think I
remember):
Oak Tree
Jerk Out
Get It
Up
777-9311
(Happy Birthday)
Gigolos Get Lonely
Too
Cool
The Bird
It was Jellybean's birthday so
when Morris went for a costume change Jerome
led the crown in a
rendition of Happy Birthday. Since nobody showed up to
the concert
(my best guess is about 75 people), Jerome called everyone up
to the
stage area and at worst you were two rows from the stage.
Overall,
they're performance was good, but too short. I clocked it
in less than 45
minutes. Most songs were abbreviated, except for
777-9311, Gigolos, Cool
and the Bird.

like Prince 2nite!" be4 launching in2 a jamming rendition of
"Alphabet St."
The song turned in2 an xtended jam, at which
point he invited the audience 2 come down on stage and dance with
him. Many people obliged :). The Artist started chanting "N-P-G", 2
which the fans in the audience responded something about some kind of
house :) -- much 2 the surprise of The Artist, who broke everything
down and then started again, 4 another xtended jamming portion with
Larry Graham.
(The Artist already played "Endorphinemachine"
on this program back in 1994.)

The

jsbass reports on September

In the
Righteous Babe Records press release for the new Ani DiFranco album
To the Teeth (release date November
16), Ani comments on her collaborations for the album --
including the Artist. Her specific comments are
below:
"For me one of the most exciting things was
having a couple of my musical heroes on the record," Ani says. Sure
enough, legendary James Brown/George Clinton sideman (and "F-Word
Tour" special guest) Maceo Parker is on hand on tenor sax and flute,
plus another feller whose name might ring a bell: The Artist
Formerly Known as Prince, who, in DiFranco's words, "sang the shit

"The Greatest Romance Ever Sold": KUBE93
radio station plays new remix
Eric Benchimol initially reported
on November 9th that he had in4mation about the KUBE93 radio station
(Seattle) premiering a new remix of "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold"
called the "NEPTUNE'S REMIX" on November 10th.
Eric Benchimol now reports, on
November 16th:
Seattle's Kube93 finally played Neptunes remix at
midnight on their new music show "The Joint" on Monday night/Tuesday
morning. The DJ (Bobby O) had great things to say about the remix
and the song. He played some listeners' comments and ALL were
positive.
The remix is very different from the Adam & Eve
remix. There's more of the album version in it (including verses,
bridge and chorus), but the beat is faster and more hip-hop. Q-Tip
also sounds very different than I've ever heard him. There are also
additional lyrics in the song (that are not in the album version or
the Adam & Eve mix).
Kube93 should be playing it some more
later in the week.
You can
listen to KUBE93 online at http://www.kube93.com and you call and
request the new mix at (206)421-9393.
The new remix, xpected
2 b included on a maxi-single released on November 23rd (see related story), is also mentioned on the http://www.hitmakers.com web site.

standing outside of Tower Records in Philadelphia 4 what has been
dubbed "Midnight Madness." Eye purchased the new CD and, needless 2
say, it is "...Fantastic." Eye listened 2 it all night. Thanks 2 the

promotional operation with Libération.
Several
readers from France report that a 7-track CD promotional sampler has

(STILL PUSHING FOR
11/2/99).
Please keep in mind,
however, that those initial plans r always subject 2
change and that nothing has been officially confirmed by NPG
Records yet beyond what has already been reported.
As
indicated in the sales sheet, the album was initially xpected 2 b
released in the US on November 2nd. However, Eric Benchimol notes on October
2nd that several sources, including the CD Now and Amazon online retail
stores, have changed the xpected release date 4 the album to November 9th. The album could still b
released on November 2nd, however.
The first single, "The
Greatest Romance Ever Sold", backed with a remix of the songm
featuring female rapper Eve, is still xpected 2 b on sale in the US
on October 5th. (See related
story.)
Eric
Benchimol reports that BMG Canada is the first Arista distributor
2 launch a Rave web site promoting the new
release.
An Arista press release dated September 10th
announced that a private, invitation-only listening party would take
place on September 16th in New York City. The party was hosted by
Arista president Clive Davis.
As reported by several people
in attendance, a press kit was handed out during the
listening party:

Rolling Stone magazine has
an article on the listening party, and so
does the Launch web
site.
A dotmusic.com article is also available.
Please note, however, that, contrary 2 what the article suggests, no
Top Of The Pops (UK TV) per4mance is confirmed at present.
FaceDown7 reports on September
18th:
the NPG did a
brief soundcheck
b4 the listening event of
"come
on"
"kiss"
"gett off"
"thank you...."
among
others
also there were promo posters all over the
hallway
and at least 2 of them were not in the press kits
and
happened 2 be the coolest
ones
An anonymous reader has a
report on the private listening party, which was followed by a short
per4mance:
just got
back from the artist's listening session for Rave Un2 The Joy
Fantastic... the event was held at the Equitable in NYC. Arista
Records president Clive Davis introduced each track off the set,
here's the rundown:
In the audience was DJ Eric B, VJ's
Ananda Lewis & Serena from MTV, Bystorm record label president
Mark Pitts, writer Nelson George, The Roots drummer ?uestlove,
vocalists Angie Stone and Deborah Cox and Fugees member
Pras.
The CD contains 16 tracks (two which are hidden)
running total 70 minutes. these were rough mixes.
the
sequence of the cd:
Rave Un2 The Joy
Fantastic
Undisputable (with Chuck D)
The
Greatest Romance Ever Sold (cd version)
Interlude
Hot
With U (with Eve)
So Far So Pleased (with No Doubt
Gwen Stefani)
The Sun, The Moon and
Stars
Interlude
Man of War
Baby Knows
(with Sheryl Crow)
I Love U But I Dont Trust U Anymore
(with Ani DiFranco)
Wherever U Go, Whatever U
Do
Tangerine
Strange But True
Silly
Game
Pretty Man (with Maceo
Parker)
the artist will appear on the
forthcoming No Doubt cd also
after the these tracks where
played, they repeated The Greatest Romance Ever Sold and the artist
walked out to a standing ovation. the artist and clive took a few
press shots and then the performance.
The performance was
like a mini jam session which opened with I Could Never Take The
Place of Your Man and ended with The Ride. Other selections included
Funky Love and Everday People (with Deborah Cox, Angie
Stone).
in addition at this event a media kit was given out
which included press clippings from The New York Times (Sept
12,99), USA Today (August 25, 99), PAPER magazine (June
99), a picture, and a laminate with the date 9.16.99, bio and color
slides.
(On a side note,
AJ Coffman1999 reports on
September 18th that, on the No Doubt official web site, under the listing for
"A small serving of
what each band member is currently listening
to," lead singer Gwen's first choice is Graffiti Bridge.)
Another
anonymous report on the listening party adds the
following:
Just got
back from the party and the report above pretty much said it
all,
except it's 16 tracks PLUS 2 hidden tracks and a
cover of
Sheryl Crow's "Everyday Is A Winding Road," which was
NOT announced at the party. Great show also included
"Sex Machine," (JB) "Talking Loud And Saying Nuthin'," "Motherless
Child," "Do Un2 Others" and more.
The album track at the
end is "Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do". That song has a serious "Every
Breath You Take" guitar riff.
the B-Side to "The Greatest
Romance Ever
Sold" is a hip-hop remix of "The Greatest Romance Ever
Sold" featuring
EVE from Ruff
Ryders.
The latest SonicNet scans also
mentions the party.
In addition, npgshy reports that MTV
Online has a story about The Artist recording with Eve
in NYC on September 10th.
The first official press release from NPG Records
and Arista is also available and confirms the guest
appearances.
Eric
Benchimol reports that the SonicNet web site also has an article on the release,
which provides additional details about the agreement. A Rolling Stone article also has more
comments by The Artist's publicist.
As 4 the identity of the
producer of the album, who The Artist had hinted would b someone with
whom The Artist worked "a great deal" back in the
1980s, it turns out 2 b none other than... Prince.
:)
Although final details r still going thru a confirmation
process, it now looks very likely that, as The Artist hinted during
his ZDNet chat, a limited edition of 100,000 copies of an
"alternate" Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic with different
mixes and possibly longer versions of the regular album tracks will b
released thru independent channels such as the 1-800-NEW-FUNK web site at the same time as the main
release. The alternate release might also b an interactive type of
CD.
Raphy also reports
on August 16th that he recently received an e-mail from Michael B.
Nelson of the Hornheadz/NPG Hornz, in which the
trombone player confirmed that the NPG Hornz will appear on Rave
Un2 The Joy Fantastic and that some possible live dates with The
Artist r being considered.
The 4thcoming album release also
is mentioned in an L.A. Times article (scroll down 2 'Artist
Rights' headline) dated August 8th, 1999, with new comments by The
Artist's attorney, Londell McMillan.
The "September" release
date was initially mentioned by The Artist himself in an in4ma
l chat after a Paisley Park per4mance on July 2nd. Due 2 the
constraints of the music business world, of course, it was xpected
that this date would b altered.
The
Artist also said that the 1st single off the new album would b picked
by the record company and that there would definitely b a promotional
video.
Fredric reports that there is a
new article on CNN.com regarding the listening party with a
photo of The Artist.

Just an update

I wasn't there, but I listened to a bit on the radio (Energy

The DJ was absolutely raving about Rave. He
said that people in the radio station had gotten the album yesterday
and had all been listening to it and review it -- and almost everyone
loved it.
They also played full songs from Rave, the
only one of which I heard was Hot Wit U (good gawd! This sounds
funky! It's like Parliament meets Penthouse Forum! :) ) And, they
gave away 100 copies of Rave to people in the

Bryant Gumbel mentions The
Artist on MSNBC
Marianne DeGrado reports on
November 2nd:
Over
the weekend MSNBC aired an interview with Bryant Gumbel in which
he
mentions The Artist and they also showed the clip from Bryant's
last day on
the Today Show when The Artist showed up dressed in a
suit and tie and horn
rim glasses and played "Take Me with U". Also
The Artist is mentioned on
VH1's new show called "The List" as
'sexiest male artist' - and I
agree:)
