Summer/Fall 1997 - Winter 1998

"Jam of the Year" world tour

The Love 4 One Another web site web site announced in early July that The Artist and the NPG would kick off their "Jam of the Year" world tour in Detroit on July 21st. There are currently few details available on this tour, though it now appears that this tour is not the anticipated Emancipation world tour as promotion of the Emancipation album has stopped, but more like an on-going type of tour that is supposed to last until 1999. It should also be noted that The Artist has been playing a lot of aftershows since the beginning of the tour on July 21st, even in cities that had never seen an aftershow take place before. The aftershows are usually fairly short (30 -45 min.) and consist mostly of covers of old tunes, but anything can be expected, especially the unexpected. Keep your ears open for an aftershow in your town!

Jam of the Year: 18 new dates announced

The Love 4 One Another web site has announced (on November 25th) that 18 new dates have been added to the Jam of the Year world tour.

Click here to view the complete list of new dates. There are some changes compared to the initial announcement on November 22nd and a few new dates.

I will start reporting on these dates individually on this page once more details are made available through Ticketmaster and local radio stations. Don't forget to report on anything you might hear or read!

Jam of the Year: our policy regarding concert announcements

In an effort to better help The Artist's fight against scalpers, we've decided to alter our policy regarding rumors of forthcoming shows. Please read the following explanation in order to better understand our position.

In the past few months, we've been reporting on rumors of forthcoming shows that had been forwarded to us by various sources claiming to have "reliable" information, etc. However, The Artist's policy, for this "Jam of the Year" tour, is to announce the shows at the last minute (i.e. usually about one week before the actual date) so as to deter scalpers by not giving them enough time to organize their trade.

By reporting on rumors long before a show actually takes places, we are obviously, albeit unwillingly, helping scalpers better organize their trade. We have decided, therefore, to adopt a stricter policy on this matter and not to report on shows until the appropriate time, i.e. approximately one week before the actual dates (or whenever the show is officially announced), even when people send us "inside" information before then.

We believe that this will still give those who need it ample time to organize their trips and ticket purchases.

Thanks for understanding our position and enjoy the shows!

Jam of the Year: TV ads...

John K. reports on December 11th that he "just saw a commercial for the JOTY tour in Dallas during Seinfeld. It basically showed clips from different videos and had an announcer tell when and where it is."

It is probably an ad shown by a local TV station.

The Artist sick

On August 16th, the Love 4 One Another web site reported that The Artist was suffering from a severe head cold, and, while this didn't affect his singing voice, he was seriously considering taking a week off the tour to get some rest.

This did not affect dates in Nashville, Memphis, etc. But there were no further dates announced until late August and a couple of dates in Hampton and Columbus were cancelled and will likely be rescheduled.

Jam of the Year: how the tour is faring

Ethan Colchamiro reported in early September:

Pollstar has put out its list of the current Concert Pulse, a list of artists and shows that people are most interested in and are selling the most amount of tickets. On their list of 50 The Artist comes in at number 6!! selling an average of 10,081 tickets with an average gross of $466,126. Some of the acts that he is listed higher than include "The Lilith Fair," Dave Matthews Band, Tina Turner, Aerosmith, The Who, "Lollapalooza '97," "The H.O.R.D.E. Festival" and No Doubt. Anyone who says his day is past can lay....

On September 25th:

In Pollstar's Concert Pulse, The Artist holds his ground at #6 this week, with an average concert gross of $502,138 selling an average of 11,190 tickets per show in 11 cities. Some of the acts he is listed higher then include: Tina Turner, Aerosmith, James Taylor, Bob Dylan, & (big shocker here) both Barry Manilow and Kenny G.

On October 10th:

In "Pollstars of the Web" Pollstar's list of the internet's most requested tours, The Jam of the Year tour is listed at #5 (up from #6 last week) out of 40 acts. O(+> has been requested more often then acts such as U2, Garth Brooks, Puff Daddy & Billy Joel.

On the concert pulse, The Artist is still strong at #5 selling an average of 11,704 tickets with an average gross of $535,935 (that's a lot of carrots) in 10 cities. His tour averages higher then Aerosmith, The Who, and Lollapalooza '97

According to the October 3 edition of Billboard magazine, the Purple Rain album has re-entered the Top Pop Catalog Albums at #50 (out of 50) according to the magazine, the album has sold 13 MILLION copies since its release

Peace & Love, E.

P.S. I have no connection with any of these magazines, and I'm only reporting what I'm reading.

About dead links...

As some of you might have noticed, the links to concert reviews and articles that appear in various newspapers across the country during the tour have a tendency to "die" after a while (meaning that when you click on the link, it tells you that the page no longer exists).

This is simply due to the fact that many newspapers put a limited number of their articles online and then either move them to another location (an "archive") or simply remove them from their web site after a while. When the articles are moved to an archive, sometimes you need to be a subscriber to a special service in order to access them, in which case there's not much I can do. If they were simply moved and are still available for free, then it's just a matter of updating the link. I don't always have time to search for each and every article in its new location, so if you happen to have located an older article in its new location, please let me know so that I can update the link.

Thanks for your comprehension.

Jam of the Year: Dallas on December 30th

The Artist played at the Reunion Arena on Dec 30th. The official afterparty took place at the Mirage again, like it was for the first Dallas concert earlier this year.

NivlekBrad also reports that NPG members "Mr. Hayes and Rhonda Smith stopped by KRBV (V-100) today (December 30, 1997). They did a short interview with local DJ Scott West. During the interview, we found out that Morris had a few roots here in Texas. He used to play in an Austin band called The Business. They also gave us a very special treat. They debuted a new song (no one knows what album it is from) called "Mad Sex." The song is phat. It is very funky and describes that u can have "Mad Sex in the afternoon." I just hope that "Mad Sex" is on Crystal Ball or even (the hopefully soon 2 be released) The Dawn album."

Late November 1997

Jam of the Year: try out in San Diego

Paisley Hillegeist reports that, according to the San Diego Tribune, The Artist was in town during the last week of November and tried out his sound gear at the Sports Arena.

Here's the text of the article that appeared on page E-4 of the December 2nd, 1997 issue:

AFKAP plays at an empty Sports Arena
Welton Jones, State of the Arts

When the Artist Formerly Known as Prince came onstage last week at the Sports Arena, the hall was nearly empty. They played anyway and nobody's feelings were hurt.

Because the public wasn't invited.

"He just called and asked if he could try out his sound gear for his next tour," said Ernie Hahn, general manager of the arena. "The crew was in here most of the day, setting up, and he arrived by air in the afternoon. They played most of the tour repertoire and adjusted the gear."

Why choose the Sports Arena for a sound check? "You'd have to ask him," said Hahn, "but he knows the house and he's quite a musician." Hahn also said he's negotiating for a Sports Arena date on the tour. With the public invited.

THEDAWNOFANEWERA had rumors about a possible aftershow on his site. The aftershow would be "a private jam session of the tribute band Days of Wild with members from the NPG after their gig with the Artist on Tuesday night."

The aftershow didn't happen, however. There was "only" an afterparty with several famous guests including Maxwell and Chris Rock. A friend reports:

Days of Wild hangs with The Artist & The New Power Generation!! It went down @ the afterparty! While every1 was waiting 4 a show, DOW was shooting the breeze with The Artist & the NPG, as well as Larry Graham, Lenny Kravitz, Maxwell, Brian McKnight, Naughty By Nature, & many other celebs.! The Artist mentioned an interest in jamming with DOW if they're ever out in Minn.!! Also, aside from him, but Kat Dyson has been following their every move, & also mentioned an interest in playing with them(Kat, if your reading this, DOW said U can play with them anytime)!!! 2 sum it all up, Days Of Wild says that The Artist & The NPG R all beautiful human beings!! Now, I don't know about ya'll, but after all this, I don't think I'm every gonna miss a DOW gig, cuz who knows who'll show up next?

About the concert, a source that wishes to remain anonymous adds:

When The Artist's upcoming show at the PNC Bank Art Center in Holmdel, NJ was announced, the public was informed that the ticket prices would be $75 for sections A and B, $55 for C and D, and $35 for lawn seats. A friend of mine who is a member of the production staff at the Arts Center informed me that recently The Artist's tour rep phoned the upper management office at the Arts Center demanding that the Artist be given a "detailed explanation" as to why these prices were so high if most of the shows there are priced at $55 and below. The Arts Center mangement also, I'm told, was hesitant to book the show because of the fact that it is to take place on a Tuesday night, two weeks after the Labor Day holiday when most New York/New England tourists who spend their summers in Jersey (and attending shows at the Arts Center) have returned home. If they didn't think the show would sell more than 7,000 tickets, why were the made so expensive?

Jam of the Year world tour: Wallingford on September 14th

The Jam of the Year was initially scheduled to be coming to the Oakdale Theatre on September 8 & 9 in Wallingford, CT. Tickets went on sale Aug 29th at noon, and prices were a staggering $100, $85, $75. Box Office # is 203-265-1501. However, Dave Bauer then reported that only one show was going to take place in Wallingford on September 14th. Additional tickets went on sale at noon on Saturday, September 6th thru the Box Office. 203-265-1501. More info about the venue is available here.

Click here to read the Record Journal review of the show.

Aftershow at The Vault, Meriden cancelled!

Dave Bauer first reported that "supposedly the after show for the Wallingford concert is to be at a club in Meriden, ironically called The Vault. A local radio station announced it earlier, but it reamins to be confirmed by the club. If anyone can confirm please let me know. It was also announced today that there will be an opening act. Larry Graham" Larry Graham as opening act of the main concert was apparently later dropped because of The Artist's plans to do an aftershow.

Joe Kelley then reported that the aftershow had been confirmed by The Record Journal, a local Connecticut publication. Click here to access the corresponding article directly. The club capacity was to be around 600 and the fee $25.

However, Joe now reports (as of Sept. 14 in the afternoon) that the Vault has on its recording at 1-203-634-8285 that The Artist's aftershow has been cancelled due to a legal matter. The Oakdale says it has exclusive rights to The Artist performing in Ct. Tickets are still available to the Oakdale gig.

Sorry about that, folks :-(. Again, this could still change at the very last minute (as well as the Larry Graham opening act), so keep listening to the local stations and stay for a while after the main concert, just in case they announce something over the PA.

Jam of the Year world tour: Columbus cancelled

There were initial reports that The Artist would play the Polaris Amphitheatre in Columbus, Ohio on July 26th. This didn't happen. Then, Dave Redelberger reported on August 19 in the morning that the show was confirmed by the Polaris venue for August 27th and that tickets would go on sale on Friday, August 22nd at 10am.

However, Dave Redelberger now reports that the show has been cancelled by the Artist. No official reason was given, although it mights have to do with The Artist's illness:

In perhaps the quickest ever canceling of a show.. The Artist cancelled his Columbus show!

No the original info was not bad. Polaris did have the date scheduled and had even sent out releases to the media plus they were very geeked about the show. However, later the same morning Artist's people called back and cancelled the show with out giving reason...except to say it was a decision by The Artist and his management to cancel the show. The Artist played in Houston on Sunday, August 10th at the Summit.

Tickets went on sale at 10am, Monday August 4 for the August 10th show at the Summit.

John Champion reports that there were rumors of a possible second show in Houston on August 12. Lee Van Richardson, Jr clarifies the situation:

Beginning the day after tickets went on sale, scalpers began telling people who were offering to sell them tickets that a second show would be announced. It was first rumored that there would be an announcement at 12:00 noon on the day after tickets went on sale. Of course no announcement was made. On Wenesday they began saying that there would be a second show at the Woodlands Pavillion. Don't believe it! I am going out on a limb in stating that this is a ploy used by the scalpers to get people to sell them tickets at face-value so that they can re-sale the same tickets the day of the show for at least double that amount. "You better unload those tickets now or you are going to be stuck with them!" "Stuck" with Artist tickets is an oxymoron.

I do not pretend to rely on inside information; but if The Artist did not do a second show in New York or Atlanta, why would anyone think he would do one in Houston.

I listen to the radio much of the day every day and if no second show has been announced this Sunday morning, the day of the first concert, good business sense would suggest no announcement is forthcomming. We all know how radio stationsa like to be the first to announce ANYTHING, especially concerts. As of yet they have not even referred to rumors of a second show.

Don't believe the hype. If you want to see the Artist in Houston, Texas, tonights the night.

I also called the Woodlands at 281-363-3300. The answering message states verbatim-"Thank you for calling the Woodlands Pavillion. The Artist formerly known as Prince will not be performing at the Woodlands Pavillion on August 12. The ad placed in the Chronicle on August 9 was a mistake."

A subversive conspiracy by the scalpers to manipulate the market? Who knows.
