1997 - 1998"Jam of the Year" / "Newpower Soul" world tourThe Love 4 One Another web site web site announced in early July 1997 that The Artist and the NPG would kick off their "Jam of the Year" world tour in Detroit on July 21st, 1997. There were initially few details available on this tour. It turned out 2 b not the anticipated Emancipation world tour as promotion of the Emancipation album has stopped, but more like an on-going type of tour that is expected 2 last until 1999. After a series of dates in North America from July 1997 till June 1998 -- most dubbed "Jam of the Year" shows but some dubbed "Newpower Soul" shows with Larry Graham and Chaka Khan --, The Artist then embarked on a European tour in August 1998. The Artist toured a number of American cities again in September and October 1998. A new round of European dates was then announced in October 4 the second half of December. The shows took place in various European countries. The Artist also played a fair number of aftershows in various cities.
New horn playersluv_4_all reports that "4 all those wondering who the other saxophonist is that played in Atlantic City, his name is Pierre-Andre Baptiste, former member of the New York based Prince/Artist tribute band Days Of Wild. He and Wayne Dumaine (trumpet player, still with Days Of Wild) both appear on Newpower Soul. They played on track 4, 'When U Love Somebody'."
About dead links...As some of you might have noticed, the links to concert reviews and articles that appear in various newspapers across the country during the tour have a tendency to "die" after a while (meaning that when you click on the link, it tells you that the page no longer exists). This is simply due to the fact that many newspapers put a limited number of their articles online and then either move them to another location (an "archive") or simply remove them from their web site after a while. When the articles are moved to an archive, sometimes you need to be a subscriber to a special service in order to access them, in which case there's not much I can do. If they were simply moved and are still available for free, then it's just a matter of updating the link. I don't always have time to search for each and every article in its new location, so if you happen to have located an older article in its new location, please let me know so that I can update the link. Thanks for your comprehension. LE GRIND

Logan reports on September 10th that he "just heard Shelly Wade of 97.9 the BOX in Houston say that Billy Sparks came by the station to update Houston fans on the rumors of a Oct. 9 show in Houston. September 5th, 1998Jam of the Year: Frankfurt, Germany? Not...Wundi initially reported that the "Festhalle" venue in Frankfurt, Germany was trying to book The Artist for a September 5th concert. However, Kai Teuber reported on August 20th that the venue told him that they had tried to book The Artist but it will not happen this time. They are trying to book him for a later date, but for sure not this September. Additionally, Bass-man reports from Germany that, "during a radio (German SWR3) interview (recorded in Spain) they asked The Artist about concerts in Germany, and he said there were some legal difficulties but now they are gone... Maybe the same tax problems Michael Jackson had at some point? (In Germany artists have to pay a special tax when they play there; MJ's tour manager Marcel Avram didn't pay that and ended up going to jail!!!) In the interview there was no real confirmation about German concerts, he just said that the problems were gone... and that he is happy touring with Larry and Chaka. He said you never know wich songs we play every evening we sometimes choose the songs on stage. They played Cream before and Mad Sex after the interview..." Willi Raeckers also sends the following clarification:
Wilke adds the following:
Hopefully Germany will get a concert soon...
August 28th, 1998Jam of the Year: London, EnglandThe Artist performed on August 28th at the sold-out 4,000-capacity Brixton Academy in London, England, with Larry Graham and Chaka Khan as opening acts. '1999 could mark the second coming 4 the man who used 2 b known as Prince.' It starts off. 'Its so tangible u can almost hear it- some Capital Radio (London Radio station) DJ digging out a copy of it, but crikey ur gonna b fed up with it by 2am on New Years Day' It then goes on 2 make a few jokes about him writing 'slave' on his face and his name change, cuz thats all journalists can ever think of 2 write about him! The picture included with it comes from the Top Of The Pops magazine last year." Tim Page provides us with a picture of the concert ticket. Click here to view the picture.
August 27th, 1998Special Concert: London, EnglandA special gig that was played at the Café de Paris in London by The Artist on August 27th and filmed for the TV special that UK TV channel "Channel 4" will be doing in October, including the interview with Mel B. recently taped at Paisley Park. Click here to read our reports on the show. People who answered The Truth's call were sent a special invitation by mail which they could then use to try to purchase tickets on Monday, August 24th for a special concert by The Artist at a venue called "Café de Paris" in London. Needless to say, the Café de Paris phone lines were very busy on Monday morning and several people thanked modern technology for that "redial" button :). It should be noted that BMG did their best to ensure that only people who had been sent the invitation could purchase tickets. If you got through, you had to answer a question that could only be answered if you had the invitation in front of you. Still, several people failed to get through or were told that the concert was sold out. Only 300 tickets were made available, which explains the special procedure and the difficulty in getting tickets. Gavin McLaughlin of the Interactive Mailing List also writes that, on behalf of Interactive Productions, he "would like to thank RCA records, Barry Clayman, and The Truth for putting this one together. Interactive were involved but at a very late stage due to the editor unfortunately attending the pub on Thursday night! Almost all people who booked through Interactive's priority booking service (in conjucntion with Barry Clayman's) received one of the 150 invitations and therefore were able to gain tickets. The whole event will be filmed for UK's Channel 4 and be shown later in the autumn (that's "fall" for you U.S. guys!) :-)."

August 11th, 1998Jam of the Year: Rotterdam, HollandThe Artist and the NPG played at the sold out 10,000-capacity Ahoy Stadium in Rotterdam on August 11th and an aftershow at the Nighttown club in downtown Rotterdam. Wayne Clark reports that "The Sunday UK newspaper The Observer (16/8/98) carried a fairly lengthy review of the Rotterdam show in the Ahoy Arena today. On the whole it was an extremely positive piece. The reviewer stated: 'In terms of sheer energy, tonight's show makes peak-period James Brown look subdued, and every other act on earth look dead'. She also praised the bass work of Larry Graham and described this tour as 'Prince's jamming tour'. She went on to describe the show as 'a complex mega-funk tapestry that is both impressive and wearying'. The latter comment was due to what the reviewer felt were a few over long and repetitive jams." Raphy reports that even though tickets for the aftershow (to benefit the Love 4 One Another charity) went on sale at 11:00 PM while the regular concert was still going on, he didn't experience any problems staying for the entire regular show and then getting tickets for the aftershow, which was announced during the main concert with flyers and an announcement over the PA at the end of the show -- even though he didn't know downtown Rotterdam too well. :-) Raphy also has his own page with his report on the show (in French) and pictures here. July 1998"Newpower Soul" live in Paris? The latest...There were many conflicting reports during the month of June about The Artist allegedly performing in Paris in July at the Palais Omnisports de Bercy. Of course, none of this happens and a concert is now confirmed for August 21st at another Parisian venue.
