The Artist in 4thcoming TV mini-series? No, it's just a dog...

Sbacon1999 pointed out on August 12th that the Internet Movie Database web site, which is usually a pretty reliable source of in4mation 4 past and future movies and TV shows, currently includes an item (last updated on August 1st, 1999) about a 4thcoming NBC TV mini-series entitled The Tenth Kingdom, and that The Artist is mentioned (under the name 'Prince') as being part of the cast, playing himself.

However, Michael Dean kindly 4warded 2 us a press release that indicates that 'Prince' is actually the name of a dog that appears in the 4thcoming mini-series... under its own name, of course. :)

Still, the Internet Movie Database web site might want 2 do something about this so that no further confusion is possible.

"Extraordinary" promo includes "Empty Room"?

Calhoun Square referred us 2 his web site which features a scan of a promo CD of "Extraordinary" (off The Vault) from Warner Bros. Surprisingly, the promo CD seems 2 include the unreleased "Empty Room", which is not on the album.

At the present time, however, there r no reported plans for a commercial single either in the US or in Europe, of which "Empty Room" could b a b-side.

We r trying 2 get confirmation of this. The scan could b a fake. Stay 2ned.

Sheila E. and Chaka Khan featured in "Women In Rock" series on VH-1

Marianne DeGrado reports on July 29th:

As you probably know VH-1 is running a series on Women in Rock. It's been awesome so far in that it hasn't always included just mainstream artists. Sheila E. has already been on and Chaka Khan is coming up. I think it's pretty cool that they recognized very early blues singers like Big Mama Thornton and Bessie Smith because I've never seen film on them before. Actually it should be called "100 Greatest Women in Music."

The Artist per4ms with Lenny Kravitz in Minneapolis

Raphy attended Lenny Kravitz's live show in Minneapolis on August 25th and reports that The Artist went on stage for the last song, "Fly Away", which he per4med with Lenny.

Matthew Perkins was also in attendance and reports:

The Artist came out with Lenny for a second encore to Jam the tune "Fly Away"! Man was I and everyone else at the concert blown away. Not only did Lenny totally rock the house, but when he brought the Artist out to Jam, the place erupted and went nuts, I know I was jumping up and down after the shock of him showing up and playing on stage wore off. This was totally the icing on the cake to see these two incredible musicians Jam together!!!

PiePie1976 was also in attendance and reports:

When Lenny started, "Fly Away", the Artist was in the wings playing along. However, when it came time for the solo, he came out into plain view and TORE IT UP!!!! He ripped apart that solo like it was nobody's business! Afterwards, he through down his guitar and it went crashing onto the stage. He strolled off like nothing happened and the crowd went NUTS!! Lenny couldn't really do much after that, so he took his guitar and set it by the Artist's and it was over! UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!

Eric Benchimol reports that a Minneapolis Star Tribune article about the event also mentions The Artist's appearance.

Party at Paisley Park after Lenny Kravitz's show in Minneapolis on August 25

Following Lenny Kravitz's show in Minneapolis on August 25th, during which The Artist guest-appeared (see above), there was a party at Paisley Park studios and both The Artist and Lenny Kravitz made a brief appearance.

Shanemicam was in attendance and reports:

There was a party at paisley after the Lenny Kravitz concert. The Artist and Lenny were there and around 3 AM, they made a brief stop on the dance floor. The stage wasn't set up so I assummed that he wasn't going to jam. But later, I wandered outside to find a small group of people standing around the garage door. As I got closer to the garage door, I realized that sound coming from inside the garage was the Artist and Lenny jamming. I only heard a few songs but I recognized "Court'n Time". Although, I would have liked to have seen those two jam, it was cool just to have heard the music through the garage door.

Another reader was also in attendance and reports:

I'm sure you know, but there was a dance party at the Park last night. Doors opened shortly after 1:00a. The stage was not set-up for a performance. The NPG were at the party and were mingling through the crowd. The Artist and Lenny appeared on the dance floor briefly and then headed up to the DJ booth. I would like to have taken a vote 2 see whose outfit was funkier, the Artist or Lenny's! Turns out the Artist, NPG and Lenny did in fact jam, but unfortunately, not for us. They were in another back room jamming with us wishing we could have gotten a taste of the magic. The party wound down around 3:15a or so.

Michael Allen Holtz/Q102 also reports on August 18th:

Just received the WB single of Prince's "Extraordinary" from the upcoming album The Vault....Old Friends 4 Sale at our station. It just comes in a plain jewel case with no picture and then on the back it tells about the upcoming album. Here's what it says:

Never B4 released recordings from Prince are finally unlocked and released on The Vault...Old Friends 4 Sale. The 10 selections on the Vault...Old Friends 4 Sale are the chosen few from his legendary backlog to finally be given a hearing. It's almost two thousand zero zero but the party's not over yet.

Written between January 1985 and June 1994, the songs on The Vault...Old Friends 4 Sale were recorded at Prince's Paisley Park studio in Chanhassen, MN, as well as around the world, from LA to Paris to Tokyo.

It has long been known that only a small portion of Prince's remarkably prolific creative output has been released, as attested to by the fact that he is among the most bootlegged of artists in modern music. The Vault...Old Friends 4 Sale is a major event for Prince fans worldwide and a noteworthy musical event for an even larger audience.

Joey Coco reports on August 10th that Warner Bros. has a web page with the cover art and xcerpts from a few songs.

Eric Benchimol reports on August 17th that the Ultimate Band List web site has a special "Advance Listen" page 4 the release which features more sound files taken from the album, including xcerpts from "It's About That Walk" and "When The Lights Go Down".

The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly has an article dated August 12th about the release, which includes a few comments by a spokesperson 4 The Artist.

"Old Friends 4 Sale" is originally from the 1985 Parade sessions, although John Burke notes that the version on The Vault is a new version with different lyrics. "5 Women" is the original of the track given 2 Joe Cocker and included on his 1991 Night Calls album. "The Rest Of My Life", "My Little Pill" and "There Is Lonely" r from the aborted I'll Do Anything musical project. A version of "She Spoke 2 Me" was included on the Girl 6 soundtrack, but this version is reported 2 b an "extended remix".

Keith Creighton reports that the August 24th release in the USA is confirmed by a Billboard article dated July 27th. According 2 the article, the 10 tracks were recorded by the Artist between January 23th, 1985, and June 18th, 1994. The first single, "Extraordinary," will b shipped 2 U.S. radio on August 10th. It will not b commercially released.

The release is also listed on Warner Bros.'s new releases page, albeit with an obvious typo/spelling mistake.

Nick Palmer reports that the Wall of Sound web site also has an article on the release, although it doesn't contain any new in4mation. As well, the release is mentioned in a MTV news article.

Maxwell gives props 2 The Artist

On the occasion of his first-ever show in Minneapolis on Sunday, August 22nd, 1999, R&B artist Maxwell was interviewed by local newspapers and, inevitably, The Artist was discussed.

Maxwell had nothing but high praise 4 The Artist, as is demonstrated in his interview with Jon Bream 4 the Minneapolis Star Tribune (dated August 20th) and his interview with Jim Walsh in the St Paul Pioneer (dated August 18th).

Andre McGarrity also reports on August 25th:

Here's a excerpt from an interview with Maxwell in the Detroit News:

Being too hit-oriented can become a crazy jail,' Maxwell says 'I look to more to someone like the Artist. 'He's been courageous throughout his career . For myself and people like D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu who grew up in the 80's, it was Prince. Very few people in this business have been as brave.

Party at Paisley Park

A party took place at Paisley Park Studios on late Friday, August 6th.

Mayho13 was in attendance and reports:

There was a party at Paisley last night, on August 6th. It was just a dance party and wasn't a performance though, he was hanging around the dance floor and talking with several people. DJ spinned so many Prince & O(+> songs that we could dance to, and also spinned several of his new songs, including "Rave On2 the Joy Fantastic" and his version of "Fight the Power." This early morning dance party was over at 4:00am.

Honeyheads was also in attendance and reports:

My wife and I came from Chicago to Minneapolis to rehearse a show for three weeks. There was no way I was going to miss the chance to visit Paisley Park while so close! It seems I hit a down-time for performances, however. The Artist jammed alot in late May and early July, but didn't hit the stage while I was in town. But he confirmed why he is the most fan-friendly musician on the planet. He opened the doors to his place for no charge, a DJ played great, loud music to dance to all night, and The Artist gave us free food, a plus to any actor! The absence of violence, booze, drugs was refreshing, and the presence of great people who really dig and understand the message of love4oneanother was abundant.

What a thrill to get a preview of some tunes from "Rave", plus his "Fight the Power" cover was GREAT!!! The original song is great, but The Artist's more laid-back rap was really cool, not to mention the BLISTERING guitar solo that buries anything else I've heard this year. The Artist was in attendance to soak up the 100% positive reaction to his new music.

This further proved my feelings that The Artist is the "music superstar" done right. I may have missed a live jam, but the fact that he wants to ensure that everyone enjoys themselves, and never distances himself from his fans, you can count on me to be front row when his next tour rolls around!
