These Rockers Really Roll
Van Gogh - the country's best-known and perhaps only touring rock band led by performers who use wheelchairs will be playing 2 sets during the Harley Davidson MDA Ride for Light fund-raiser at the Harley plant in York, PA on Sunday, May 2/99. (Set times are 12:45 and 2:45 PM and run for 45 minutes each.) The band has also just released their self titled 4th CD to Top 40 radio which features a track written and loaned to them by "The Artist" formerly known as Prince.
Known for their granny glasses and funky hats, the Atlanta based band which was formed in 1992 consists of vocalist/music writer Robby Heisner, 36, lyricist/vocalist Ricky Heisner, 38, and drummer Scott Robertson, 35, who is a paraplegic and uses an adaptive device to operated the kick pedal.
Both Heisner brothers have Becker muscular dystrophy and as a result, use eye-popping super-fast electric wheelchairs in their daily lives as well as onstage. As serious musicians, the Heisners' carefully negotiate the line between drawing attention away from their wheelchairs and toward their music.
"We like songs with melody and harmonies. It should be a fun, positive experience, not mad at the world, hating life" says Robby.
Despite their enormous popularity in disability circles, Van Gogh's songs are notoriously free of references to disability. "We don't write message songs. We hope our message is in our actions. The fact that we do it well says more than if we gave a seminar."
"We don't sing it's Hip to be Crip or Kumbaya kind of music" says Robby, "that's not what our music is about. We're musicians who just happen to have disabilities." "We'll hold our music up to anybody's" adds Ricky. "It's important to do what you do with excellence and integrity. It's all about the music. We're a rock and roll band writing and singing rock and roll music that we hope people will like."

Morris Day and The Time live in May
Rhastus69 reports on April 10th on the following Morris Day and The Time live dates in May 1999:
May 15 - Pensacola Springfest, pensacola FL
May 21 1999 8:00PM - STATE THEATRE, DETROIT MI
Jill also reports that they played at Park West in Chicago on May 22nd, 1999. She reports on the show:
Went to see The Time on Saturday and am I glad that I did! It was a last minute decision to go, after all I had see them about two years ago and couldn't imagine the show being that much different. Was I ever wrong :) The Time torn the place up. The "place" was The Parkwest, a small night club located on the North-side of Chicago. It's an ideal place for a concert because of it's intimacy. The times that I've seen Prince (1981 and again 1996) were two of my favorite performances, mainly due to the intimacy :) The Time hit the stage around 10:00 pm and rocked steady for about two hours to a "sold-out" crowd. It was clear that the place was filled to it's capacity, you couldn't even find standing room!
The guys perform all of the hits plus a few that only an hard-core "friend" would recognize, which included (not necessarily in this order): Wild and Loose, The Walk, 777-9311, Gigolos Get Lonely Too,Girl, Cool, My Stick, If The Kid Can't Make You Come (Morriss' comment before this song was "only people that had been following their career for a long time would recognize this one" , Ice Cream Castles (these last two songs were performed with about a dozen ladies from the audience on stage, and Carla you put them all to shame :), Jerk Out, My Drawers and The Bird (which was the encore).
The evening was filled with funky music, familiar antics between Morris and Jerome. Two of my girlfriends got a chance to meet the guys after the concert (Alyce and Connie, I ain't mad at ya' :) If The Time should pay a visit you town, check them out, you won't be disappointed.
BlindBAM also reports that Morris Day and the Time will also b playing Riverfest in Little Rock, AR on
Memorial Day weekend (May 29-30).

Larry Graham and NPGCS's in-store per4mance at the Electric Fetus voted best show of the past 12 months
Mayho13 reports on May 10th:
In Minneapolis's free news paper, CITY PAGES, Graham Central Station has been nominated for "Best Concert Of The Past 12 Months --- Graham Central Station In-Store Concert at the Electric Fetus." Here is the article:
"Simply for rarity, this slice of Minnesota pop life was worth the wait. As the deep voice, string-popping bassist for Sly ans the Family Stone and the leader of Graham Central Station, Larry Graham had inspired a generatoin of 70's funk practitioners, not least a young Minneapolis resident named Prince Rogers Nelson. And on this cold February day, after more than a year of touring and woodshedding wiht his adopted "Little Brother," Graham celebrated the releas of breezy new Graham Central Station label, somewhat hopefully titled GCS2000. In the crowded confines of the Electric Fetus record store on February 18, 1999, graying fans with old records to be signed mingled with New Power newbies wondering if the Artist would show. After Graham walked in (late) wearing his trademark white cowboy hat, he launched into a set of classic Sly songs and originals that had the crowd swaying. then it happened: The children dancing on the CD platforms, the energized New Power Generation band, and Graham's steady right thumb pushed the moment past the attendant hype into deep funk ecstasy. Thank you for letting us be ourselves, indeed."

Brother Jules mentioned in The Source
Andre Thickening reports ln May 10th:
Brother Jules is mentioned in an article about the up and coming hip-hop scene in MPLS (pg 114). It is in this month's Source magazine (June'99) and features a picture of him too.
The Article states:
"A strong presence on the scene is Brother Jules, who DJs for The Artist, runs Nocturnal Street Productions, and organizes the Minneapolis Record Pool (52 DJs strong) out of Wide Angle Records. An employee at Paisley Park since '91, he is currently working on a remix project incorporating The Artist's many ballads ("strictly love music" he explains). Brother Jules' skills can be heard on the infamous "Purple Medley" megamix, his CD, The Remix Experience, and Grand Central Station's recent GCS 2000 album. He also spins Fridays, 10p.m.-2a.m., on KMOJ (89.9), a 1000-watt community station that presents one of the few outlets for Black music on the airwaves."

Kurt Van Hoeck reports on May 27th:
Bought a ticket for the Lauryn Hill concert of yesterday evening after reading the Artist's experience on The Future: she clearly likes The Artist a lot because some purple notes were played in the jammin' part and in the organised competition on stage between the band and the DJ's a 'When doves cry' sample was used by the DJ's and this made the hall go crazy (many Artist concert T-shirts as a matter of fact !).

The Artist mentioned in Sunday New York Times article
BNB'S Gal reports on April 10th:
There was an excellent picture (circa "I Hate U") of the artist on the front page of the Sunday's New York Times Arts & Leisure section. It headed an article which discussed the inequities found in the music industry. The Artist is also mentioned in the body of the text.
lisa also reports:
The Dream of the Artist is becoming a reality.
In todays New York Times {Art and Lesiure section} a huge picture of O(+> is featured on the front page. The caption reads, "SIGN OF DEFIANCE". "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince wore the word slave on his cheek while under contract with Warner Bros. He also announced he would rerecord all 17 of his albums for the label when he was released from his contract in 1995".
The headline reads, "A Chance to Break the Pop Strangehold".
The article explains how artists naively start out with a dream of producing thier music and how the industry can destroy it. There is information on the trial and error of other artist such as Joan Osborne and Joni Mitchell.
Great insight into what O(+> has been trying to say all along! The positive and negative sides.
"The record Industry has reached a moment of decision. In the next few years, artists may break the corporate grip that crimps their creativity."
The picture is not online but you can read the article here:
