Though not an official website, this is Prince’s first experimentation with using the computer as a new way to access his music. The Prince Interactive CD-Rom was released in 1994 when the term “interactive” was hot but the internet hadn’t quite caught up to these ambitions yet. CD-Roms were a popular product at the time when dial-up was very limited and people went online to mostly a text-based experience. Coupled with Prince’s underground film, The Beautiful Experience (currently unreleased), it is clear that Prince was fascinated and excited by the possibilities of connecting directly to his audience through their computers. It would be several years until that became a reality for him, but the idea started here. Anil Dash does a live walk through of the CD-Rom in the video above.
