Prince, Family of fans, loved ones,

Can I talk to you, .......tell you what you mean to me? I ADORE YOU!!! Family of fans, if you were not there you missed out on almost three hours of life, love, joy, pleasure, pain all wrapped in one!!! March 9, 2002 is a night that will live in infamy!!!
Jazz mixed with rock, soul, and R&B is what was served up on a bed of love, pure love and admiration for the intimate gathering of faithful fans. As Prince sung his heart out to a remix of "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore", my knees trembled through my black, red laced thigh highs with excitement. You couldn't ask for better four play than this!!! I did not have the pleasure of previewing "The Rainbow Children" because I wanted the experience of this night to fall on virgin ears. I adored "Mellow". I hope to receive the C.D. next month as a birthday gift from a friend. I love you!!! I loved "One Night Alone" with you. You are love and God is definitely love!

I won't go into too much detail, just wanted to highlight the positives of my experience. this was the third prince concert i've attended, and musically it was just as good or better than the previous two. i have to say that prince is on top of his game in both showmanship and musicianship. i know of no other performing musician in this day and age that can match him. to have the man play in my hometown is an honor and a privelige.

highlights:
1. the soundcheck!
2. the stage, lighting, visuals and sound were perfect for the mood the music set.
3. meeting many nice and wonderful people. yvonne and her husband, who sat next to me and my sister during the soundcheck. jen (from minneapolis) and her brother (from st. louis) who sat next to us were very nice, friendly and fun to sit next to during the show.
4. all the songs i never thought i'd be able to hear live.
5. prince's medley on the keyboard at the beginning. just beautiful! i need a recording of this show! please release a live cd, prince!

well, i'm finally back to atlanta. 2 friends and i drove from atlanta to louisville to catch this leg of the tour before he comes down to the atl. we got to the palace theatre at about 5:00. during the drive from atlanta, you go from eastern standard time to CST back to EST. so we thought it was only 4:00 and almost left to go eat, but matt suggested we tough it out. within minutes, they let us in for the soundcheck. if we had left, we probably wouldn't have gotten in. a lucky break! when they let us in, prince rhonda, j. blackwell, and renato were laying down a slow funk groove. as everyone took seats up front, prince says "hey, all of you aren't club members (they let in some 100 folks or so). he then asks, "so anyone play guitar?" three guys get up and jam on princes telecaster, prince screams the final solo. then a long bluesy version of the other side of the pillow, prince playing the hollow body gibson. then he asks, "who here can sing?" about 25 folks go up on stage and sing the chorus to last december (my favorite from the rainbow children). as the chorus is leaving the stage, a guy asks, "will you play at my church tomorrow?" prince responds, " do they allow rock music in your church ' he replies, " yes, i'm the pastor." prince then says to him to go to the mike and answer this question, "if so, then what's the difference from your church and a disco?" this fellow appeared to be a nice fellow, but was way over his head in this discussion. a 20 minute discussion on religion, church, ect. followed. having been in the celebration discussions, i would have preferred all jamming and music, but some responses were cool. A guy asked prince about whether he is inspired to writs lyrics or music first, to which he responded, " i am music." anyway, on to the show. it started with a 20 minute piano medley, with a long adore and a solo piano purple rain. i think that was his response to some disappointed fans missing the signature hits. the piano solo version was way cool, definitely different from the norm. one of the absolute highlights of the evening, was that prince's voice was spectacular. we noticed it during the soundcheck, he's never sounded as good, amazing. the meat of the show was new material from the rainbow children, this was the show i wanted to see. 1+1+1=3 was slaming as well as family name. i hadn't seen family name on other set lists, and was very happy to hear it. complete versions of take me with u and raspberry beret? yes, that's right. when i read other posts, i didn't believe it, but it's true. for those interested, he does no costume changes. and actually costume is not the right word, he wears clothes, not costumes for this show, a sharp, gray double breasted jacket, black slacks, black shirt with high neck, and white boots. it's definitely a different prince on stage. he doesn't do a lot of schtick, he lets the music speak for itself. this show is a must for true music lovers.

Hi Prince and the NPG - it was awesome hanging with you Saturday night at the Palace - how appropriate for a Prince. It was great the way you let those guys come up and play your guitar during the sound check- that was really cool (("like the other side of the pillow")). It was electric sharing the stage with you and sitting with you in the audience. It was surreal, shaking your hand, eye to eye and having you sitting right behind me. You are a very funny man - great aura. I wanted to personally send my condolences about your mother - but didn't push to get too close, I know you must get tired of that, so I just played it cool in black & blue . . . you had a show to do. Oh - also heard Congratulations is in order . . . may you have many beautiful years together.

Thanks to you and the band for such a wonderful show - much love to you all.

Hello Everyone.

My concert experience was very amazing!!! I will always enjoy watching and listening to Prince perform and will always be impressed by his musical ability. His Band is awesome, and John Blackwell is great. I believe he gives Sheila E a reason to worry.

Rhonda played the bass guitar as well, and the guy on the keyboard, Renato, well, he needs to be seasoned, but he has talent. Prince is and always will be the center of the musical universe. The band started sound check with a lovely song from the TRC album. After the song was sampled, he asked members to share their musical talents with us and he offered his guitar to a few people who volunteered to play it.

Shortly after amateur hour, a pastor asked Prince to perform at his church, and Prince responded to the invitation in regard to how well he was able to communicate the truth. At the moment, sound check became a question and answer session about different beliefs, bibles and problems within the churches. I was quite impressed because there were so many insights on religion but we all managed to discuss these issues as one.

I became captured by the subject, I found myself wanting to hear more. I am not sure if Prince has embraced a certain life style or belief about religion but one thing is for sure, he is against all ideas that are in support of separatism.

The concert was fabulous, and it was so imitate that could you feel Prince's breath blow across your cheek if you tried. I was so in the mood for TRC. It was an experience that I hoped for. The jazzy ensembles are so beautiful, I wished Prince had time to perform the entire album, lyrics and all. You got to hear to this album performed live, it takes on you on ride to all parts of the world.

Fortunately, he played several songs from the album, some hits, and some of his music released through the NPGMC. He got really emotional when he performed the Last December, but otherwise Prince was very energetic and seemed to be pleased to be at the palace. He also covered music from other artists.

He played ballads on his piano, and allowed a women to sit on stage while he performed. During one of his guitar pieces, he came into the audience and played awhile in the aisle and then returned to the stage. My mom was astounded by his performance, and she smiled during the entire show. She particularly loved his jazzy selections. Prince had all sorts of vibes moving through the crowd Saturday night.

We had such a wonderful time with Prince that we didn't want him to leave. The audience chanted and raved until he came back out for us, and then he played several piano medley's. He is so amazing. The concert was so entertaining and so fun, I hope he returns soon. Overall, the concert was as wonderful as any other show he has performed. He's not moving quite as fast, but he is definitely still creating beautiful music. This concert was definitely a great way to spend "One Nite Alone" with Prince.

Love to you Prince!!

LA LA LA.......Means I love Prince! The Louisville Concert was so off the chain, matter of fact it was caviar on a loaf of french bread!! I am still reeling so much that my friend and I decided today at the last min. to attend tomorrow nights show in Indy! The sound check was the bomb, but I was disappointed about no after-party. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Monday night show.

Luv ya much Prince, thanks 4 such a great performance!

i would like to thank prince for ruining every other form of music that exist today. to say im one of the biggest prince fans in the world is an understatement. i actually one time painted my car purple and had his symbol painted gold on my hood. i kind of lost touch over the last year or so and it is truly amazing how genius prince and his work is. i was so happy to b at a prince concert and not have to hear radio hit after radio hit. the new stuff is just the greatest, plus i love u but i dont trust u anymore is always a tear jerker. when he played the instrumental "Under The Cherry Moon" my eyes got incredibly watery. i saw the Jam of the Year tour in Lexington and both shows were excellent but the intimate atmosphere of this show made my year. i had front row orchestra seats and i couldve swore he smiled at me a time or two. i joined the music club as soon as i got home and hope to get membership access to the Richmond, Virginia show. if u get a chance to see this modern day Mozart, it is truly a once and a lifetime experience. peace and love. Oh and Prince if u read this, at the Richmond show, if u could throw a couple of bars of "The Holy RIver" in i could die a happy man. thanks for a life changing experience.

from Shawn

Just wanted to say "Thanks" to Prince for an incredible show at the magnificent Palace Theatre! Although we weren't in the Music Club members section (actually we weren't even close...balcony row Y...and it only goes to row Z), I felt closer to the music than at any other concert I've attended (including being front row at Prince's Memphis afterparty at the New Daisy Theatre in '97). He seemed much more at ease with himself and the audience. I felt that we were all as much a part of the show as Prince and his phenomenal band (John Blackwell, you are amazing!).

Some musical treats were "The Beautiful Ones," "Boys & Girls," "Under the Cherry Moon," "Nothing Compares 2 U," "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore" and maybe even a couple of bars of "Condition of the Heart" which is one of my all-time favorites. I could go on and on.

The highlight for me, though, was Rhonda and Prince's cover of "Didn't Cha Know" by Erykah Badu! That was a great surprise.

Again, thank you again for a fantastic evening! We hope to see you in Louisville again soon.

Where to begin…the beginning…that’s the place to start. Hello, Beautiful People, I'm Stephan Kirby, the pastor from House of Prayer Church in Louisville. I had the blessing to meet and converse with Prince, on March 9th.

After reading reports form other cities on this tour, I wondered what the Louisville Show would be like, (hmmm) simply put, nothing like I have imagined. The Sound Check alone would have satisfied me. I witnessed a group of artist perform and interact with the public in such a way that is unheard of. As my wife, Nicole, and I walked in the Louisville Palace, we heard this "funk-nasty" grove coming from the speakers and the calm voice of Prince jokingly say, "I know that you all are not NPG Music Members." Probably not, cause no one checked my ID. Nevertheless, my wife and I found where we would be seated for the show, we stopped there. Row G, Seats one and two, not bad (considering Ticket Master messed up with the password (another story). As I stood, listening to NPG, Prince as if there were any guitar players in the room. Nicole asked if I was going to volunteer, I felt that if I would have got up there to play, I would have froze. Three brothers took turns to play, I was impressed, because they were cool.

Things became interesting when Prince asked us to come on stage to sing back up on "The Last December" Nicole again asked me to go, (Thank you Lord, for my wife.) I went and would never regret it. Going up on stage I walked past Prince and notion, He’s taller than I first believed. I went to the back to check out the band up close, and still couldn’t believe that I was on stage singing background with Prince and the NPG.

After the song we were all coming down and as I was stepping down I turned and extended my hand to Prince, and said, "you can come play at my church tomorrow." He replied, "Oh really, now what would the preacher/congregation say?" I told him that I was the pastor, that’s his eyes got big and smiled, then asked me back up to say that in the microphone, and that was the beginning of the unique conversation with Prince. He asked me the question of what is the difference between music in the church and in the club. I answered the condition of a person’s relationship with God. In the church (organized) we agreed, that at times you can’t tell the difference between it and the club. And before I knew it I was center stage by myself, in a somewhat debate over religion, I forgot about the concert J . It was interesting we discussed the name of God, origin of the Bible, and which version to read, Sacraments the Catholic Churches, Muslim, Jews, Protestants, and Hindu. Very interesting, I must say. After being up on stage for what seemed to be about twenty or so minutes, the bodyguard told us that we have to wrap everything up because of the concert. Prince said that this is what is done at the Celebration in Minneapolis asked me to stay after the sound check so we could talk, but the ushers and security folk ask us to leave, I wanted to talk more. Maybe one day… He also said that this is the best sound check that he ever had.

Afterwards, many people in the lobby came to me and asked what it was like to talk with Prince, and told me that I held my own up there. As I sit here reflecting, it reminds me for the Cross where Christ died, He made the ground level. We all have to deal with the truth of salvation on a daily basis. But good news is, His Love is there to help us understand that Love is God and God is Love.

Prince, thank you, for your openness, you are truly genuine. It was my pleasure to meet you. Again, you are welcome to come to our church anytime. Did you get my card?

Oh lest I forget, the concert was the best I've seen.

Last night 3/9 in KY was one of the most incredible music performances I have witnessed. What an amazing talent Prince has to not only perform but connect with his audience. I have attended only a few concerts because of their expense and ironically told my husband in February that one concert I would love to attend would be Prince. How surprised I was when 4 days later I saw in the paper that he was coming. I immediately told my husband I was going, no matter what the price or when it was.

His music brought back great memories of my high school days and gave me an even greater appreciation of how his music has grown and developed over the years into such a variety of styles that anyone could appreciate. Just looking at the audience in attendance is a great indication of Prince's appeal with people of all races, classes, ages enjoying and appreciating his talent.

As an elementary teacher and 32 year old mother of a three year old and four month old, I appreciated his message about coming together and accepting each other for who they are. It is time for people to gain an understanding of one another rather than stand back and judge. I am trying to teach these lessons to my students and my own children.

I hated for the evening to end and hope that he returns to Kentucky again in the near future. I will definitely be there, hopefully closer than my balcony seats. After reading and hearing about your club members' access to your music and you before the concert, you may earn a new club member!!

Thank you Prince for giving me three hours of sheer joy, fun, and rocking music. I felt like a teenager again.

One Night Alone....

Well after the the mishap with the presale password, i still managed to get row "c" orchestra seats. Not too bad, but it was obvious that many non-club members were seated closer than i, and in larger ticket blocks than 2. also, there were about 4-5 girls in some seats right near us who shared 2 seats the entire night, taking turns in them, and usually crowding the people around them out so that they could fit.... (not to mention yelling to each other and some girls behind me all night, smoking pot, and talking on their cell phones?!? i'll never understand why someone would talk on their cell phone at a concert.....)

anyway, back to the "review"
we got the The Palace about 4:45 and other NPGMC members were already there waiting. at about 5:15 they let us in and did their security check. We got out laminates by showing our tickets. No ID needed, no names checked to a list (though there *was* one there). Both myself and my fiancée got a laminate.
At about 6:00 they let us into the stage area, and it was a mad dash for the front of the stage (there ain't really no need to shove people, you're gonna get to see him just the same). P and the band were doing a little jam, kind of bluesy. he made a joke to the effect of "i know all you ain't music club members".
A few folks came on stage and played his guitar. he went into the intro for the cross/christ, then into Last December and asked 25 people on stage to join him. When more than that kept on coming, he said "that's enough", "uh, that's enough" but folk just kept on getting on stage. After a little jamming on stage, as the club members were getting of stage a preacher made a comment to P and it was all over from there... we got into a religious "debate". with Prince sitting in the audience and the preacher on stage with a mic. Prince was trying to steer the guy, and us into what he thought the "truth" was and what bible we should use, etc. asking a lot of questions, and talking in riddles, but never giving his answers..... there were a few jokes thrown in like when he asked what the difference between a disco club and a church with singing was, and someone said the cover was higher at a church. then security kicked us out at 7:00 so they could get ready for the show.

The main show started right about at 8:00. the first time i've ever seen him "on time". we waited almost three hours in Indy a few years back, and almost an hour in Nashville on the hit'n'run tour. He started off the show different than other reports i've read, with just him and the piano, singing One Night Alone. he did his little piano medley (including a bit of purple rain) then went into the normal rainbow children/muse set list. from there it was pretty much the same as other shows, set list wise. There were a lot of blank faces in the crowd throughout the night, except when the hits were played, but i was one happy camper. i loved the chance to hear songs played live, that i'd never heard before. 1+1+1=3 was totally funky and worth every penny i paid for the show. ever since the RC download, i've wanted to hear that one live...

To those that didn't like RC, the stuff works *much* better in a live environment. He did an extended version funky/bluesy version of HCYDCMA and ended with an awesome version of Anna Stesia, turning it into a funked up chant at the (extended) ending....

no afterparty announced, and that kind of dampened my spirits as after the show i was pumped and ready to go all night.....

Overall, a great experience, only brought down by a few things, with which Prince and Co. had little or nothing to do with...

from Woody,

This was one unforgettable evening. We got to the soundcheck around 5:00 and talked to a few people. Then at 6:00 we finally got in and Prince and the NPG were playing some jazz. He asked if we had any guitar players in the house and I raised my hand and I got to go up first. I really don't know how to explain what I was feeling. I have Prince's guitar and he is 3 feet away from me and he said we are in the key of A. Then I began to shake praying that I don't embarrass myself. People told afterwards he enjoyed it and that I did okay. It was absolutely awesome. I still can not believe I got to play one of Prince's guitars. The soundcheck was cool he was sitting behind us during the religious discussion. As far as the concert itself, he gets better and better every time I see him. He played a lot of older material which was cool. Rollercoaster was off the hook. That song brought the house down. If you get the chance you have to go see the concert. I just want to say thank you Prince for a wonderful night.

from Wes

I'm not sure if this is the proper place to send a comment about Saturday night's concert (3-9-02), but I just had to share with someone. The concert was GREAT!! The man really knows how to put on a show. The crowd seemed to love it as much as I did. Even when he did the new songs that I did not know, I still enjoyed just watching him play his guitar. And I loved watching the people who did know those songs singing along with such excitement. Oh yes, and the soundcheck before the show--let me tell you...I have never been to anything like that before, so I didn't know what to expect. Before they opened the doors to the auditorium, the guy (I think it was "Billy", the club owner-guy from Purple Rain. How cool is that?) told everyone to take their time and not run. Sit where you want. I walked in and it was dark so I had to adjust my eyes to see where I was walking. I could not believe Prince was just right there on the stage jammin' with the band. I froze. I was freakin' out!! If I had kept walking I would have been able to get closer, but we (my friend and I) were still on the 5th or 6th row. He let people play his guitar! We had a discussion on religion and church. He came off the stage and sat out with us (two rows in front of me). I was freakin' out! I could almost reach out and touch his cute little white hat. I was disappointed because there was no after-party. No explanation was given. Nothing was said. Prince just said "Good-night, Louisville, I love you." Then he left the stage. He, or someone could have made an announcement, because my friend and I, and about fifty or sixty other people were just waiting 15 minutes to here something. Finally I overheard one of the Palace security people on his radio saying that there is no after-party, so everyone needs to clear the auditorium. My friend and I did not wait around for the official announcement, or to be forced out. Anyway, other than that, it was a great night! Fam-for-life,

Wes

P.S. I just wanted to add; during the soundcheck, the third guy who played the guitar (tall guy, with the furry hat) he got off!!! And also, Stephan, my brother--Love you man, but I wanted to her more of the jam session and less of you. But I know you were caught up in the moment and didn't realize how long you were up there. Once again, the concert was great! When he did Rollercoaster, that was crazy!! The crowd (myself included) loved it. Oh and if this gets posted publically; the blonde in Orchestra 2, row G I think seat 6 or 7, wearing the blue halter-type outfit--I loved your excitement. I swear you knew every song, even the new ones (I'm jealous). I was just worried (a few guys were hoping) your breasts were gonna fall out the sides of your top. Hello to the couple I met from Lexington. Anyway, I've seen Prince five times before, so I knew it was "gonna be a beautiful night"; I was not disappointed. But what's up with the after-party?

Prince

Thanks for a wonderful time at the Louisville Palace!

I'm not going to rehash the setlist or tell my life story....But what I do want to share is my thoughts on "One Nite Alone" with Prince.

First off, the sound check experience was a total treat! This was my third Prince concert ever, and it will quickly be noted as the best. In the sound check, we were given opportunity to hear some improv blues, followed by "The Cross" and "Last December". Before playing "Last December", Prince asked if anyone wanted to sing.....from there, I and many others joined on stage to sing the chorus. I didn't shake your hand Prince to thank you for that experience, but your acknowledgment of me as I stepped on stage was more than enough, even though I tripped a little coming up.

The conversation that followed was about the TRUTH, and I'm not referring to the song with that title. The question raised was, 'if there was a language barrier, how would one know the difference between a group of people dancing in a discoteque and a church?' Good question, and many insights followed....keep spurring the message Prince, one day we'll all sing and dance together as one!

The Show was everything and more! Prince spanned 1979 to 2002 in roughly 3 hours! Although many people wanted to hear recognizable HITS, Prince focused on exactly what he said he would, THE MUSIC!!!!! From piano ballads, to rockin guitar, Prince played what he wanted to hear, and for the true fams, what we wanted!

Thank you again for the experience Prince. Although I'm a Louisvillian by way of Kansas City, Louisvile will always welcome you and your gift of music.

If you're reading this and don't get it, don't come to the show unless you're ready to put down the pretense, have some FUN, and last but not least, COME TOGETHER AS ONE!!!!!

~John

Ok, well I just got back from the best Prince show I've ever seen first off. I went to the show in Lousville and the show was off the hook. When I walked into the soundcheck and the music was already playing I was so hyped. I mean, we sat down on the second row and really just got to experience some music. Prince was too cool. The conversation with the audience was definitely cool....even if he did throw the preacher man off a lil bit. He looked like he was going to drop the tea when Prince questioned him about the disco/church. Two lil complaints unrelated to Prince I think. Number one....the club members paid 100 dollars for the tickets to the show.....for the really good seats. I did have awesome seats. The show itself was well worth the money. But, about half way through the show, a lot of the people from the back started making their ways into the aisles. When there was noone in the aisles, security was walking around like bulldogs telling everyone to stay out of the aisles. When 100 people came into the aisles and blocked the view of the people that paid more money than them, security stood by like someone had stold their cookies or something. I don't get that. I couldn't even see the stage for like half the show because all of these drunks were in the way. The only other complaint....no afterparty. At least I don't think. After the show, we sat there, along with all of the other NPGMC members and waited for the announcement about the afterparty....nothing. After about ten minutes...security and the venue staff very rudely came up to the front and started clearing everyone out. They weren't nice about the situation either. In fact, I think the woman that came to our row said something to the effect of "We'd like to go the hell home sometime tonight." We asked some other members about the after party on the way out and they said that they had talked to some of the people and heard that there was some sort of conflict and a place couldn't be worked out so they weren't going to have an afterparty. This really dissapointed me. I left, because we had a really long drive home....so I hope that I didn't miss the announcement for the afterparty. Besides those things, I have to say the show was as off the hook as I could have ever hoped for. Best show that I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. Thanks for a great concert.....

from George

What an amazing evening! It began at 6 PM with a group of about 150 people (NPGMC Members and their guests) getting access to the soundcheck in our beautiful Palace Theatre. Prince was already onstage when we arrived jamming out some bluesy notes. He asked if anyone played guitar. 3 people did and Prince allowed them to play his own instrument. He played a couple of tunes (he began "The Cross" which went right into "Last December") then began the discussion of religion and the Truth. It was very interesting as those who spoke also listened. Unusual given that most discussions about faith and who is right or wrong end up with bull heads butting. Prince sat down right in front of me so I leaned in and asked him if he thought faith and religion were two different things and if faith is better. Soon we ran out of time as the stage had be prepared for the main event. Prince said it was the best soundcheck he's ever had.

The concert itself began with Prince sitting alone on stage behind his keys. He did play a bit of "Purple Rain" before getting up to take center stage and go right into "The Rainbow Children" After that is was all over! The roof blew off the joint and we were all taken on a wonderful ride. Wow can John Blackwell play! Rhonda Smith, the bass was made for you. And Prince? Well, ya know. Not many can speak through and instrument the way he can.

I spoke to the Paisley Park DJ on the way out. He said there was no after party due to the lack of a good place for it. Suprisingly enough, that didn't damper my spirits. The soundcheck and concert made the idea of an afterparty seem anticlimactic.

Prince, your music has been a valuable part of my life for as long as I have paid attention to music. Thank you for such a wonderfully personal evening. When I was 13 and heard "When Doves Cry" for the first time I never thought I'd actually get to talk to the man who created it and so many other of my favorite songs. You are invited back to KY anytime you like.
