from April

As I was looking up into eyes so lovely everything around them blurs into a haze…I was overcome by a deep gratitude...so thankful to be alive at that moment in that space and time. Drinking in that soft commanding voice we felt him. His sincerity was as real as a soft blanket in front of a warm fire. We all know who "him" is. My friends tagged me Mrs. Him, because whenever Prince is with in 500 miles of me I drop everything to be where he is. When my people can’t find me they assume it was "him" again. This time my girl Ree-Ree went with me. I tried my best but failed to get my girl Jo to come too. So it was the April and Ree-Ree team, we jumped in the lovely jackets Ricco made and headed for Indy.

We had nothing but faith that everything would work out all right. We were ticket-less because the self-proclaimed "Masters of tickets" are cruel and conniving. We kept the faith and made it to the venue just in time to see the tour bus spill forth a vision of loveliness, first came Tacomi, then Trevor then (eevaaaahhh the sound of air going in through parted lips and not coming out) "him". I’ve got to quit pointing, but when I’m excited and and my lungs are uncooperative I tend to point and squeal. This first sighting of our funky rock star had us soaring. We knew everything would be just fine.

We "acquired" a pair of nose-bleeders for tix and got in line for the sound check. The sound check is what we were really looking forward to. All the other ones have been open and intimate, just priceless experiences. When we made it to the front of the line we were pawed over by security. They practically skipped our jacket pockets but felt nearly every inch of our skin tight pants. I said "uhh-unah I’m telling Billy!" So Ree-Ree stayed in line and I went to tell (like I was 14). I found Billy and told him that at all the other One Night Alone Shows I had been to they had girls to search the girls. It was too late for us but when I looked at the line again they had a lady security guard up there, that Billy knows how to handle stuff.

While I was looking for Billy trying to save the girls who would come in after us from getting what we got, they let people into the theater. Ree-Ree broke for the front and was out of sight I took the outside path and went in late. Again our faith that everything would work out proved well placed. Ree-Ree saw Tacomi and asked if he would please hold our seats down, because she couldn’t jump the bar (tight pants ;-) We definitely wanted to be "front row center with the out-stretched hands" at the sound check because our seats for the show were too far away to enjoy Prince’s magnificent funky faces. Takumi came through huge for us. By the time I jumped the bar Ree-Ree was settled in and our spot was secure.

We were sitting there chirping excitedly to one another when all of a sudden it was "him." A lady yelled something out and Prince replied "I haven’t done anything yet." I sure hope he knows that just to be in his presence is sweet pleasure for those of us who have welcomed his voice, his image and his work into our lives for so many years. When we see him the force of who he is to us floods our bodies instantly. I can’t begin to describe how much seeing him playfully interact with fams, flashing that wondrous smile and sharing stories from the road mean to us. But how could he know what he means to us we all have individual stories. Without him I would have never believed God is Love simple and plain. He is our joy, our poet, our preacher, our comfort, our counsel, our activist, our hero, our love. I wonder what we are to him? We are each unfamiliar but I hope not strangers. The fact that he welcomes us to his home at Paisley Park is so endearing. As fams we are bonding with each other because of our common love for "him." He gives us so much of himself through his work that we really do feel cared about.

Speaking of feeling cared about at the after party, he blew our mind body and souls out...couldn’t even began to think straight...walking with a glaze over our eyes...we just looked at each other and knew we would never be the same. I only thought I was whipped before......mmemh. (but I digress ;-) So we were sitting front row center cheering and screaming at the sight of the one and only and he asked us if we were in our seats, A large percentage of us told him we got stuck way up in the balcony. With kindness and authentic concern he said he was going to do something about that. We truly felt appreciated, it was like he honestly understood how badly we wanted to be up front. I mean we know all the words to everything, we appreciate Rhonda’s subtle coolness, JB’s wild energy, all the experience in the horn section, Renado’s mad skills and well...him.

He chatted with us for a spell in that glorious speaking voice that is so lovely and distinct that it defies accurate description. And he listened to us for a while, unprecedented for a star of his calabur. He played skin tight, and he let a fam play The Christ, and he played Everlasting Now, we were bumping that on the drive up. When the time came in our voices that were already sprung from screaming we yelled "Accurate knowledge of Christ and the Father will bring the Everlasting Now/Join the party, make a sound. Share the truth, preach the good news Don't let nobody bring you down The Everlasting Now!"

The NPG gave us an overdose of pure unadulterated energy, and we could hardly stand it. They got to that extra crispy stanktified funk level again. It was like a riptide that snatches at your..well. You know the feeling when your breath gets caught between inhale and exhale and your mind and body don’t know how to respond? That’s where we were when Prince looked down and said something along the lines of I wish you two were sitting there. Love really is too weak to describe what we feel for him. The butterflies we had went straight to our hearts chasing speed with Red Bull. You just feel light and floaty when he is near but when he’s speaking to you…our feet were rapping like Thumper from Bambi. It’s ludicrous what he does to us, but we wouldn’t trade it for the world. I mean standing before him you can close your eyes and imagine a beauty (inner and outer) so heightened and complete that you wouldn’t change a single thing; then open your eyes and see it realized in him. No exaggeration, I mean it, quit playing, alright then.

Wanna hear about the shows? The som mo ma biscuit eaters acted the smuck up. They owned us and they knew it too. We surrendered to their grove with reckless abandoned. Breath came in spastic short gasps. It was a glorious magical experience, in the back of our minds we knew we would be talking about this night when we were old and gray. They tickled, tantalized, transformed and astounded us. We felt refreshed, and revitalized as our emotions bloomed in his presence.

It would take a lifetime to detail the magic of each moment but here’s one. Prince was standing behind his keyboard as the indistinct spotlight’s blue glow flowed gently over his shoulders, neck and back. He let his head fall back and illumination playfully trickled down his perfect features just as I was lost in that image trying desperately to burn it into my mind forever he began to tease us with the first notes of the father’s song, his face was immaculate his body language screamed I’m bout to be in you and then…. (oooohhhh had to walk away for a minute)…and then those delicate strong fingers committed to the father’s song and he began to play, we were throbbing the sound system was pounding through us when he transitioned flawlessly into purple rain. I thought that was a child of his that had been silenced for a while, yet here he was in all his glory. It was simply mystifying.

Another treasured moment that we will cherish for a lifetime came at the after show. Uh Renado showed us why he has that job that night. The man was flowing from the purest of zones. What he did snapped our necks and spirits to full attention. Prince even turned around and watched him fly across the keys like an inspired soul. Then JB leant his power, speed and rhythm. Rhonda was on point and so was the horn section. Then Prince grabbed his stringed mate did that confident stride, landed in a powerful wide-legged rock star stance and ripped into us with a passion and vigor that will forever be unmatched. He was unchained, pumping voltage through us until we were trembling, hoarse from joyfully crying out and holding on to each other so we wouldn’t collapse. Just when we thought they were going to allow us a splash of oxygen JB kicks in with one last solo aahahahh it was off the hiz-ook. Santana probably woke up in a chilled sweat after what they did to his song, they funktified the nucleus out of that jam.

Prince’s ability to bring out the best in the artists around him is incredible. Unlike some people he does not fear being out shined by another (probably because it is impossible). Prince’s choice to surround himself with inexpressibly talented musicians and allow them time to thrill us is a testament to his greatness and his commitment to excellence. John Blackwell is the greatest drummer ever and he is only getting better by being so close to Prince. That’s a non-negotiable fact if you ask me. The NPG really is the tightest band in the land and we are so thrilled they are touring and sharing their gifts. Never doubt our joy or our sincerity when we say that. We have nothing to gain by dishonesty so you might as well believe us when we tell you how wonderful you make us feel.

We love you more than we can contemplate, we can’t thank you enough for touring when you could be at home hanging with Uncle Larry, we will never get out enough thank you’s for the wonderful relaxed sound checks, or for the fact that you are willing to flash your stark raving beauty at after shows and parties. We wish you love happiness and good times always, you deserve it all.

Much Love!
April and Ree-Ree

Monday night March 11th at Birdy's nightclub in Indianapolis wasn't Manic Monday, it was "Mystery Monday" and Prince and the New Power Generation were 'Mystery' guests at their aftershow at Birdy's. It also marked the conclusion of the first year of this variety show at Birdy's.

At about 6:30pm, I got the news that the band was going to play the night of my monthly variety show that is called Niswander's "Mystery Monday." I had the Niswander Band (and a few of my alter ego characters) and another band scheduled to perform as well as two solo guitarists. I started my opening monologue as usual, but only sang excerpts of two songs a cappella, one of my own compositions called "Surfin' With Jesus," and "It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night" alluding to the fact that I had a very special 'Mystery' guest in the house tonight. I introduced my scheduled 'Mystery' guest local DJPapabear and following him was the NPG DJ and by 1:15am the unscheduled 'Mystery' guests Prince and the NPG took the stage for an incredible 90 minute set that included funk and rock jams of "Atomic Dog," "Calhoun Street," "Paisley Park," a salsa medley including "Oye Como Va," and even some instrumental jazz.
My last 'Mystery Monday' in January (I took February off) was a musical and comedy tribute to the late great George Harrison. On Thursday of last week I received an e-mail from the Office of George Harrison acknowledging the Tribute show. Little did I know what would happen this month.
Thank you Prince and NPG for making it such a 'beautiful night!."
Niswander (pronounced nice-wander)

One more thing, Everyone that I had scheduled to play at Birdy's in Indianapolis Monday night are cool with the sudden Prince and NPG show. As a matter of fact, everyone is already booked at Birdy's in April and almost everyone was rescheduled for my next "Mystery Monday" April 22nd and I'm sure DJ Papabear will be spinning alot of Prince inbetween sets all night long !
Respect yourselves and each other!

Wow! Three days after the show and I am still hearing the music.

Please allow me to share my story of the effect that Prince has had on my life.

Eighteen years ago, myself, my cousin and my sister were able to see our idol on stage at the Purple Rain tour in Lexington, KY. We were teens then and it was the absolute event of our young lives. For weeks leading up to the show all we could do was think and talk about the fact that we were going to actually see Prince live and in person. We spent much of that time arguing about who loved him more, etc. We had monogrammed Prince sweatshirts and many many posters. We made up dance routines to his songs. I remember my cousin saying that she loved him so much she would kiss his sweaty feet! ha ha The concert then was incredible and we all wore our lace gloves and cried during and after (like I said: we were teenagers and it was 1984...)

Life is busier now and we don't see each other as often. On March 9th my boyfriend and I attended the incredible Prince show in Louisville. (He's a fan too and dressed as Prince last Halloween and sings Purple Rain with me on karaoke!) We were inspired and amazed at the "new" Prince and listened to the Rainbow Children over and over before and after the show.

Chance had me pay a visit to my cousin, Stacy, and sister, Shannon, two days later. They were both having very difficult days and when I told them (sheepishly) that I had gone to the show they wanted to kill me. I insisted they HAD to see the concert and promised to take them to the very next available show. We immediately got on to the NPG site (which I had recently joined) and realized the only concert listed was that night in Indy - 3.5 hours away 4 hours from showtime. We just looked at each other, considering our impending obstacles of marital problems, sick children and early morning job interviews/work and said "Let's go." Within an hour we made phone calls to husbands, boyfriends, and baby-sitters and were on the road.

We were absolutely giddy on the way to the show and it was a wonderful time to reminisce and renew bonds with the two best friends I will ever have. I told them little about the show on the way there, but warned them that they should not expect it to be the same concert we had seen in '84.

Normally, I never buy from a "scalper," (and promise never to again now that I am an NPG member!) but desperate times called for desperate measures and we met a guy with only 3 2nd row pit tickets for sale - just 20 minutes before showtime. We felt it was fate. When we reached our seats we could NOT stop screaming and laughing - this was to be a dream come true! I watched their reaction as he began to play, and as they danced and clapped, could see that they loved what they heard and I felt an overwhelming sense of satisfaction.

Then came the question... "Who thinks it is better to be a follower?" I had almost forgotten about that part! Immediately I threw my hand in the air and saw my innermost dreams (and worst fears!) realized as Prince pointed at ME and said "Then follow me." With wide eyes and one hand cupped over my mouth I, somehow, made it to the stairs where Prince guided me up to the stage and directed me to have a seat on an array of pillows lying there. I sat there shock and in awe as he played two incredible songs. The massive crown and all fear of being a spectacle disappeared as I watched the most versatile, sexiest artist alive do his thing. It was so surreal that I am still reminding myself that it actually happened. It was the singlemost "coolest" moment of my life, and Shannon and Stacy shared it with me. The show only got better as we all truly felt we were sharing "One night alone with Prince." The messages and the music were perfect and I am inspired by the man who dares create art that is truth.

During the show, Prince stated that this was not 1984, but 2002. The three of us felt as if that message were intended for us and it was not lost as we realized that we had evolved along with the man on stage and what he played now was exactly what we wanted to hear.

We have spoken very frequently with each other since then and have already started planning on our next show. Thank you Prince, for bringing even more joy into my life. I promise to take them to every show with me from now on... PS: We would all still lick your sweaty feet in a heartbeat! ha ha

In Mozart's days, about 40 attendees was considered a sell out. A little bit more than this number of members of the NPG Music Club were so 4tunate to experience Prince and the NPG during sound check. Women were quietly whispering "oh, my God, he's right there…so handsome, so present, so everything." The actual show started at 8 p.m. - so if u think that Prince is going to start after the posted start time…u may miss out by not being "on time." The show was the best - the band is tight and lean. The set that Prince played piano solo is to savor 4ever - especially "Free" There was sandalwood type incense burning that was permeating the air so fragrantly! If eye could have only been that incense surrounding Prince :). Eye could go on 4 a long time, but I have to say at the beginning of the show, the woman that Prince brought on stage to play his guitar for…she was so delightful that she reminded me of a Genie. The after show was sweet joy and the Paisley Park number was just to the 9s. i get this feeling that our hearts are more special than what we may be realizing - it's like our dearest are living in them. Eye wish that we could have the Paisley Park song from that morning on CD to play anywhere, anytime. The Santana jams were also thrillers. Thank U so much…it's so awesome when we are called Rainbow Children...loveGodalone.

The sound check was kewl. Where’d you get those huge lava lamps? The Show is entertaining and save the best song 4 last! The party was outstanding. My legs still hurt from dancing 4 what?? Like 8 hours. Maybe we can go bowling next time.

Well what can I say? It was all I expected and more! I live in Louisville, KY and my friend and I decided Saturday night after the performance in our city, we would experience it again in Indy! We are so glad we did!

We are so thankful for the after-party show, the performance at the concert and after-party was first class. My friend has actually suggested maybe trying to make another show in the near future (good thing we retain our own business). This experience has been so uplifting. I have always been able to listen to P's music for inspiration and connecting me in a spirtitual sense. My grandma passed away 7 months ago from a year and half battle with Lymphoma--- so I often feel a need to connect with my inner spirit, and through his music I can achieve those needs. It takes a simple song like Comeback -------- Wherever you go, Whatever you do,------Don't talk to Strangers-------and one of my newest favorites Last December to put things into perspective (the most important things in life).

The day after the Louisville concert there was an article in the paper with an interesting interpretation from a mountain climber who I believe had met the Dalai Lama and tried to simplfy his beliefs in a poem. I found this simple poem enlightening and similar to the topics discussed with Prince at the Louisville sound check.

Never Give up

Never give up, no matter what is going on
Never give up
Develope the heart
2 much energy in our country is spent
developing the mind, instead of the heart

Develope the heart
Be compassionate
not just to friends, but to everyone

Be compassionate, work 4 peace in your heart and in the world work 4 peace and I say again

Never give up
No matter what is going on around you
Never give up

Like I said before it is a SIMPLE piece, but these basics we surely can all agree upon.

Prince, thanks 4 all the great music.

Peace & Love always,

Shellie

I have waited 24 years 2 see Prince in concert. The $$ did not matter anymore. I was bound and determined to see him this time. Everyone @ work was laughing as I raced through our building to the computer and the phone desperately trying to get tickets. I was seated in the balcony this time but hope 2 be in the front row 4 the next show. I thought the way Prince was talking and interacting with us at the sound check was very down to earth and quite refreshing. I relate to the lyrics and poetry in his music. I appreciate the fact that he has the guts 2 be who he is & not what every 1 else expects. Some say strange... I say individual. I am one of those individuals who appreciates the strength and magnitude that music can have on an audience of all ages. Prince, if you happen to read this, I am a leader not a follower, but that is because life has a funny way of forcing some of us to be. In your situation, you should understand. If I had followed the people around me as I was growing up, I would never have found my poetic side listening to your music.I would have gone down that "Wide path", not the "Narrow path". It would have been much easier. Let's face it, not every 1 likes to sit around in their teenage years writing poems, some even consider you a geek. As an adult now, I realize my hurdles and triumphs made me strong and willing to be a leader if necessary but able to work along side of someone if they show respect for themselves and me. I was raised in "The truth" and was taught not to idolize, but only 1, however, I do thank U for coming 2 Indianapolis and giving a little personal attention to your members here. I know I speak for all in saying we appreciate it. Unfortunately my friend had partaken 2 much of the crown royal and I was forced 2 choose between your afterparty and seeing her safely home, so I missed a good time from what I hear. I had a pass around my neck and didn't get to use it, but I'll be waiting next time.

from Paul K.

After 18 years of fam-dom, this was my first Prince concert experience, and eye won't miss other chances 2 see him again after this.

2 be invited 2 sit in on his sound check was such a treat. When he first came onstage, eye imagined eye'd be rather in awe. Eye was surprised, and happy that eye was not. The man has let me know who he is through his music. Eye did not feel like a "star" walked onstage. Eye felt like eye was seeing an old friend.

There were probably 150 of us there. Eye am not sure how many of that number were legit NPG Music Club members though. Eye heard that 1 of the Indianapolis papers publicized that fans were welcome 2 the sound check. My ID was not checked 2 ensure I was in fact a member.

We all applauded the man like crazy when he walked out. He reacted with "Eye didn't do nothin' yet!"

He asked us all where we were sitting, and just about every 1 seemed 2 indicate "way in the back." He made it clear he was working all of it out and that in the future, members of the club will have dibs on the first few rows, as it should be. As far as eye was concerned, eye was in the first five rows 4 the sound check, so it's alright! He told us he could see that the members weren't getting the front seats because he's noticed the crowds closer to the front seemed more "affluent." He mentioned 1 show where a woman was sittin' in the front row, "Just eatin'." WILD! I'm pretty sure he said he stopped the show or something.

1 of the things every 1 in line outside the Murat Theatre noticed were these absolutely incredible jackets these 2 young ladies had on. They were homemade and had the "NPG" insignia on them, with a jacket length picture of Prince. Incredible craftsmanship. He asked that 1 of the jackets be handed 2 him, and held it up 4 all 2 C. He asked, "Where can eye get 1?"

Speaking of clothes, I'm just this lil' Jewish boy and eye probably would look ridiculous, but eye wish eye could dress like the man. Eye have always loved his clothes -- but eye am sure only he can wear 'em well!

He'd seen "The Time Machine" the night be4, said it was "bunk" and asked if we'd seen the original because "that was cool." He introduced us 2 "shy Rhonda," who was sitting in the back in between one set of keys and the drum set. He asked her 2 come and say hello. She demurred. It sounded like Prince wasn't going 2 have much time 4 the sound check. As it was, eye don't think we were let in2 the auditorium until about 6:15 or so. Things didn't seem like the previous concerts and sound checks eye had read about and been so excited by. Prince also asked where would be a good place 4 the after-party; something that might fit 500 people or so. Many people, including my cousin Jackie next 2 me, suggested "The Slippery Noodle," the oldest blues club in town. Prince smiled and said, "The Slippery Noodle, huh? Eye ain't playin' nowhere called 'The Slippery Noodle!" My cuz wanted 2 explain it wasn't as bad as it sounded!

The band launched in2 "The Everlasting Now." At the chorus, he asked us all 2 sing along. Eye was "lettin' the head bob," singing and tappin' the drum beat in the air. The second time the chorus came 'round it seemed as though he looked in my direction and saw my enthusiasm. Eye'd like 2 hope anyway! : ) The music was slammin'! Prince was obviously happy with it, 4 after it was over he said, "Eye was startin' 2 think Morris and Jerome were 'bout 2 come out or somethin'."

After "Everlasting" a guy in the front row asked Prince if he could play guitar. Prince held it out 4 him and we cheered. Prince stepped off 2 the right of the stage where his keyboard was and watched the guy start playing "The Cross" -- amazingly well, eye might add. Prince got this really mischievous little smile on his face when the guy started 2 sing. Then he started backing up the guy on the keyboard! WE ALL LOVED IT!!

Some1 from the back called out "It's 6:30" and Prince said "uh-oh." Seemed time was indeed running out. The experience of the guitarist in the front row got 1 or 2 other people in the audience 2 be pretty bold. Some1 sitting 2 seats 2 my left then asked if he could sing with Prince. Prince asked, "What do u want 2 sing?" The man responded, "Anything u want man!" Prince thought 4 a minute. "Uh.....'Oops! I Did It Again!" We all laughed. Then Prince said very seriously, "We know it!"

Eye think the guy said he wanted 2 do "Adore" or something. Prince responded in 1 of his silly voices, "Eye ain't singin' no love duet with no man!" The guy said, "It's 4 my wife! Please!" Prince said, again, teasing, "You ain't singing that with me, not now, not later, not ever! Eye ain't callin' no man delicious! " It was hilarious!

Speaking of hilarious. There was a story he told and eye do not want 2 ruin it 4 any1 else he decides 2 tell. If u happen 2 go see him, ask him 2 tell y'all the story about Larry Graham and the woman on the airplane! It not only slayed me but he cracked himself up! Eye have always felt Prince's humor in his music. A lot of people tend 2 miss it. 2 see it up close and personal was wonderful.

A woman in the audience asked if she could give him a love note. He seemed to indicate it would not be cool 2 accept it. After that, he and the band jammed on a totally smooth instrumental version of "The Other Side of the Pillow," from THE TRUTH. He was altering the level of the sax at a couple of places in the song. Eye loved watching "Prince the musical director" and it was so great 2 see how his band members keep up with him.

He was reminded again it was time 2 wrap things up and said, "Gotta go." We all moaned. A guy yelled, "Who's in charge here?," and Prince answered, "Apparently u! And 1 more outburst like that young man....!" Every1 laughed. He told us all 2 enjoy the show, because he planned to "tear the place up 2 night!" We cheered a while, then left the auditorium 2 hang out in the lobby.

Eye won't give 2 much detail about the show itself because otherwise this mail will become 2 much like a novel. Perhaps it already has! (Eye love 2 write and have a pretty good memory as u can probably tell). Prince and the band of course were beyond incredible. Eye have a few observations.

1, Eye totally saw a difference between the Prince at the sound check, and the Prince who was onstage during the show. At the sound-check he was more laidback and just jammin' whereas onstage you really felt like he flipped a switch and turned on the "Prince persona" a bit more. It was a really fascinating thing 2 C. Eye think eye am going 2 try 2 get 2 the Celebration this year, becuz I can only imagine what a Prince concert would be like with the majority of people being club members. If eye was "High" from Prince Monday - whew - eye bet at the Celebration eye'd be sky "High."

2, I loved that Prince focused on TRC material and per4med "A Case of U" (because I LOVE Joni too). His NPG radio segment got the crowd going, but eye especially loved his encore at the piano. The man has incredible passion, and his playing of songs like "Adore," "Nothing Compares 2 U," "The Beautiful Ones" and "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" were mesmerizing. He w as almost in total darkness with nothin' but incense burning and the lights from the bubble tubes glowin' onstage.

3, the lighting for the show was phenomenal. The curtains that surrounded the stage would turn deep shades of many colors throughout the show. So beautiful 2 look at.

4, Eye cannot believe how totally disrespectful the regular paying audience was. The show started on time, but Prince had 2 get through all of "The Rainbow Children" and "Muse 2 the Pharoah" be4 every1 was in their seats. In fact, at 1 point during "Rainbow" he actually said, "Come in, take yo seats!" There was not a moment through the ENTIRE SHOW that the aisles were totally clear. Every1 kept going back out 2 get more beer or liquor. 1 woman actually lit up a cigarette in the theatre! Eye have never been in *any* concert / theatre venue like the Murat where stuff like that is allowed. When the house lights came up after the show, eye saw beer cans all over the floor of this beautiful theatre. Eye went up and asked the ushers if allowing booze was standard policy, and they said it was 4 everything except the ballet. Eye was appalled!

5, the non-music club audience listened, but I don't think they heard. When he said, "If you came 2 get yo 'Purple Rain' on, it's not that type of party!," the majority heard the words 'purple rain' alone and started 2 scream, so they missed the point of what he was saying. I was surprised he even played the little bit of it that he did during his solo set at the piano. Even at the end of the concert, when the entire audience was screaming how much they love him, 1 could feel the battle he was having in order to get his message of love 4 one another across.

Most glaringly, when the "Abraham Lincoln" quote was put up on the screen, the crowd started 2 cheer loudly at the sight of Lincoln's name. My cousin and eye were shocked at the response, because it was clear no1 was really reading those words. In my opinion, Lincoln's words about separatism should have been *booed* not cheered!

Prince (if you are reading), my cousin Jackie wants you 2 know that the song you sang about "Abraham Lincoln" was 1 of the most powerful things she has ever heard u do. She is hoping 2 have a recording of it someday.

Also, she and eye were 2 of the three people waving 2 you as your bus pulled away from your hotel 2 head 2 Birdy's 4 the afterparty. (Eye gave you thumbs up and called out how much eye loved the show.) Jackie and eye were so hungry after dancing at the concert, so we went 2 the only joint open in town 4 some food! We saw all the tour buses and figured out we must be across from where you were staying. So we decided 2 just kinda hang out and wait 4 y'all 2 leave. We kept a polite distance because we were kinda slap-happy and had concern we'd bother you or somethin.' We all had other obligations the next day or we would have come 2 the after-party!

On a personal note, eye look 4ward 2 seeing you again whenever eye can and am emphatic when eye say eye will always support your endeavors. Your music connects 2 my soul. Even though eye may have a different spiritual background and perspective from you, eye feel the message in your music quite powerfully. Eye didn't sing louder Monday night than eye did during "Anna Stesia." Eye wish more people truly knew and heard the words 2 that song. You've shown me that you are not only an amazing communicator through your mu sic, but a truly generous, wonderful human being. Eye hope someday 2 speak with you personally, even if 4 a short moment. Due 2 lack of time, eye feel like eye missed out on a chance 2 talk with you at the sound check -- eye was ready!!

Much love and respect 2 u !

I must thank Prince 4 the years. I have been to too many Prince concerts 2 count. I also thank my dear mother for allowing me to be free 2 listen 2 whatever type of music that I preferred to listen to during my youth under her roof!!! She even took me to see Prince when he opened for Rick James....seems like a lifetime ago!

Now, let's get down to it...The performance at the Murat Theatre was unforgettable. I had been waiting for Prince to play there and one day I was on the Internet, saw Prince was coming and I knew I'd be there! I love all of the new material and it's true meaning. Me and my husband partied. I cried, wow I was emotional! Thanks for taking us "old schoolers" back in the day! The music was incredible and I felt every word of the message that Prince delivered. We are in the most turbulent times and coming together in love and unity should be everyone's main focus in this life. Much love 2 Prince for taking a stand(as always) and delivering a very powerful and insightful message. This was the most unbelievable performance I have seen Prince perform. No hype, just the message and the music. I love the transitions that Prince has made over the years and I feel as though I have grown up right along with the music.

The Rainbow Children is an awesome collaboration of pure love and soul. When I first listened to the CD, I played it three times in deep privacy and a dim lit room. Interruptions cannot happen when one-first listens to this piece of work. It is both beautiful and flawless.

I will 4-ever listen to WNPG radio any day of the week. I don't follow our radio stations here. It's the same o'l stuff hour after hour...how tired!

Last but not least, the band was great and I have to give John much love...you worked those drums til they were tired! "You go John"!

Much love 2 Prince and the NPG for stopping by Indianapolis and throwin down! Hope U stop by again 'cause I'll be there God willing.

I Rocked The House In INDY!

My name is Craig Franks, and I am funky. At least last night I was when I had a dream come true for me. At the sound check in Indianapolis, I got to go on stage with Prince and jam! Initially I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to do this because there were at least 200 people waiting and the sound check started very late. When we were finally escorted into the venue (Murat), My wife Nancy and I quickly made our way to the front row.

After watching the band tune up for a couple of minutes, Prince made his way out on the stage to a round of applause from the NPGMC Members. He expressed his concerns about the situation with how tickets were being distributed, and then went into a jam. Afterwards, someone signaled that it was time to wrap things up. After 1 song! Someone a few rows behind me asked, "Who's in charge here?" Prince answered, "I guess you are!" Then he made a funny comment like "One more outburst like that young man and.." We all laughed, then he paused for just a second... Here was my chance.

I yelled "Prince, can I do a song with you?" He replied, "What do you play?" I said guitar, then he motioned for me to get on stage! I literally leaped from my seat on stage in one motion! Prince precedes to hand me his vintage Horner guitar and pick. As I reached to take them, time froze for just a minute, and I can't believe this is happening. The guitar was a little high on me, but I wasn't about to adjust the strap that was customized for Prince! I motioned for him to take the mike so we could jam, then he motioned for ME to take the mike, while he stepped back with his hands behind his back!

Okay, great, now I have to sing and play while he watches!! Which song do I play? I approach the mike, take a deep breath, and go into The Christ. I try to focus in on my wife, because I'm used to singing in front of her as opposed to a couple hundred hardcore Prince fans.

Just as I'm ready to sing the first verse of the Christ, I hear addition music. I look to my left, and Prince is looking back at me playing the keyboards! Oh my God, I'm getting light headed. I can't believe this is happening. I feel like I'm going to faint, but I must go on with this.

I manage to make it through the song to a round of applause from the people in attendance. Prince walked over to me and said, "That was the best so far! Good job!" Which I take as meaning the fans who have performed with him on the tour up to now. I shook his hand and took my seat. I asked my wife could she believe what just happened, at the same time Prince was asking me a question. She pointed up at him, then I looked and Prince said "What kind of guitar do you have?" I was so surprised, I almost couldn't answer him! Fender! I replied back. I wanted to say more, but I was caught off guard! He did a couple of more songs and we went back to the entrance area to await the concert. I will never be the same again!

One last thing, I didn't get the chance tell Prince something:

Thank you for letting me get my piece in!

Much love, see you soon.

The concert was great and worth the trip back home to check it out. The soundcheck was worth the $100 ticket price alone. Thanks P for playing 'SkinTight' when I suggested it! As far as the show, it was good that there was mixture of old & new stuff. Much props go to GamerX for playing the Christ and not messin up. Also thanks to Takumi and John B. for showin love too.

I just got home from the INDY show. It was awesome! The after party was incredible. I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with the keyboardist. I was slightly disappointed with the crowd at the Murat. I don't understand the people coming in late and then continually getting up & out of the aisle. I spend $ that I did not have to see Prince. It was well worth it and I will enjoy being evicted!:) I have been listening to Prince and have all the LP's since the beginning. Thank you very much Prince for another incredible performance. I will remember this as long as I live.

I caught the "Purple Rain" tour in 1984 and I'm glad I didn't pay $100 to see it again last night! The first time I saw Prince live I stood in amazement, now I stand in awe. Over the years, I've remained a fan and I've truly enjoyed the growth in his music. I've never actually made a response to a website before about a concert, but after the show I saw last night, I truly want to say thank you for the awesome, awesome, awesome, performance. I'm STILL dancin'! By the way, I think I found the road too:) I know we'll end up in the same place. One more thing, we made it to the after concert show at Birdy's but had to take off a little after 1 am due to situations out of my control. I'm regretting it bad!!!! Will I have another chance to catch Prince in Indy soon? I haven't seen any further concert info. Please don't make it as long this time.
Thanks again! I'm truly a new person!

At the end of the concert they announce after party and show at Birdies. As we get to the door Sam says $30 unless you have a member pass I'm like YEAH.!!!!! Here's mine. We go in check the place out, and all. It was packed I'd guess 1,000 people. Since we were late and the place was full so we went upstairs. We could see real good up there. We sat down at a table with a screen that showed the stage, had our drinks and I called my girl to tell her what was going on then I watched a girl kick some guys butt at pool. We keep checking the screen to see what was going on. Takumi was setting up everything and when he was done I thought well we better go get a standing spot. We got one right at the over look thingy. The first thing I notice about the stage is those aren't Blackwell's drums and it don't look like they were going to set his up. I'm thinking that place is going to have to get some new ones after tonight cuz JB gonna tear them little things up! The band members were showing up and playing a little then Prince soon came after. Atomic Dog, a "Touch" jam, The Ride, Calhoun Square, Paisley Park and Soul Sacrifice Jam and just jam jam jam jam jam...only 6 or 7 songs but the concert lasted about 80 minutes. During the Touch jam Prince picked up a paper drink coaster or maybe someone handed it to him and he played his guitar with it like it was a pick. Prince was in a good playful mood. A few people had some glow sticks waving them around and Prince said "now I can't be playing with flashing lights in my face" in a joking way. Not long after that Prince says "I can't be having my picture taken up in here" so a worker turned the camera around to face a wall then turned it off. The Ride sounds awesome. Calhoun Square just floored me!!!!!!!!!! it will be a long time before I get over it. Then came Paisley Park!!! this was a surprise and great! He did a lot of talking for this song...."NPG members where you at? next time I go on tour I'm just taking you....goin to put you in the bus but our money goes into the interments so I can't do catering.....naw now I'm serious, no catering" then more talking then as he's still singing Paisley Park he says "come to the park and play with us that will be June 21st" Then just more unbelievable jamming. When he was done he quickly said "good night" and left. The band members stayed around for a bit signing things and Blackwell had a few pictures taken with fans, he also autographed the little drum set.
SURREAL!

This concert was just what I needed to take my mind off of the loss that I experienced on Saturday. My apartment building burnt to the ground, losing everything that I had in it. I went to the soundcheck and the concert and for a moment in time, all was well with the world. I thank you, Mr. Nelson and company, for giving me a night that I will never forget. I do indeed hope that this concert is put on a DVD, so I can forever remember it as the beginning of my healing process.

Your concert in Indianapolis was wonderful. It was nice to see you in a differernt place in time. A place we all come to later in life.

This was the first time I was able to be close enough to really see you. A different concert, but a most meaningful one I have ever seen. You are most talented, thoughtful, playful , and misunderstood entertainner I know...

I wish you well and hope to see you soon..

You are the best!!! I have been a fam since my teenage years, "Controversy". I have grown up with you being part of my life. Thank you! Performing 3 different times for us last night in Indy seemed to good to be true. But, it became true. I was so close for each event. 3rd row for the warm up, 3rd row for the concert and right up front for the aftershow. Do you remember me? I was the blond in the center. I was hoping to grab a table upstairs at the aftershow and mellow out, but I was told my laminate didn't give me access. Dumbest thing I heard all day. I hope to meet you someday. I'd love to sit down and talk with you and give you a big hug. Your music is very colorful, fulfilling and your voice is comforting. But it leaves me wanting more. Can't wait to receive the cd's for this year's npgmc. Thanks again for making it special for us "members". Hope to make it up in June. Oh, by the way, I'd love to have some of your concerts on DVD.

Hello From Buffalo !
I am still on a cloud from march 7 One Nite Alone W/ Prince was the Greatest show on earth that night. Buffalo has a new respect for Prince! He was Cool like the other side of the pillow. The man had us all under his spell because Buffalo is for real when it comes to music. Prince asked us if we liked our radio stations here. He was answered with a chorus of Nooooo !!! I think that should say something to the recording industry. We don't want lip sync artist's, we want real musicians who can perform with a bucket and spoon if they had to and Prince is that Artist!!! He sounded like a DVD live and that aint easy that's why fakers fake the funk but not Prince. He Truly delivered for us and to tell the truth i would have paid $200. per ticket to see him for that kind of show. And with Maceo Parker,Rhonda Smith and Johnny B'well ? OH MY GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Signed,
A Rainbow Child.

This is the 5th time I have seen Prince live and I must say he gets better everytime. The soundcheck was good. He played the Everlasting Now and that was funky, even more than the cd. I was hoping he would play it in the show. I must say I enjoyed the Louisville soundcheck better, but considering I was 2nd row center in the pit, I can't complain. He did seem distant and pre-occupied. He mentioned that they had just had a meeting over the ticketmaster issue. Most of the members, including myself, had to sit in the balcony and couldn't get pit or the 1st row seats. It was still enjoyable to see him be himself with us.

My date (who is a hot, little spanish girl) and I got to the theatre about 4pm. Just in time to watch the buses pull up, and we watched the band members and finally Prince get off. (As security watched us)

The show was not as good as the Louisville show at the beginning, to me. But after Prince did "Rollercoaster" people began to loosen up and I must say with his response, the show was actually better than Louisville. He did "Beautiful Ones" and "Cool As The Other Side Of The Pillow" (jazzy version), which was not played at the previous show. He didn't do Last December, but Anna Stesia was longer (which is one of my favorites). And he said, (not exact quote) "There are not many paths that lead to God. There is only One. All others paths are detours. The path to God is Jesus. He is the key".

The aftershow was at "Birdy's". It was $30 per person. So, I whipped out $60 for my date and I. I asked the man if my members card helped, and he said, "yeah, u can go in for free." Saved me money, thanx Prince.

We waited in a smoky, crowded room for quite a while. The dj did a good job and there were some songs of Prince he played that were longer versions than the released ones, such as "Groove On" by GCS and "Mad". Also, during the performance Prince would point at the dj and he would do some scratchin'.

The last song mixed in was "Atomic Dog" and that is when Prince and the band took the stage. Prince and Renato finished up the song on keyboard together. It was really great to hear him play "Paisley Park" , "The Ride" and "Calhoun Square". All the band members were totally amazing. Each one played their instruments beyond what I thought was possible, especially John Blackwell. Sorry to say it, but he put Shiela to shame. And Greg Boyer hit some notes on the trombone that would make my lips bleed. They were really funky last night (or this morning), and I was just in awe. Prince must drop his picks when he plays, cuz he kept picking them up off the floor.

I had the best time I ever had at one of his concerts and I hope he continues to play for us thru eternity.

Put us on the tour bus with ya, please. Even if we don't eat 4 days.

For "One Night Alone With Prince" being my first concert to go to of his, I could not of ask for anymore. I went there respecting and liking his music. I walked out loving him and his music. I cried four times throughout the concert, and when I woke up this morning I put some of his jams in and cried some more. Simply and Utterly AMAZING. His music is more than just words and notes. Its food for the soul. I could not have asked for a better night with my Fiancee Lindsay and Prince. Thank you for your wonderful Music Prince, don't ever stop making it. And thank you Lindsay for everything baby. I love you guys.

For me, any chance to see Prince perform live is a blessing. Each concert has been a different experience and it only gets better. The soundcheck was the best part though for me and the guy who got up on stage and played "The Cross".....Well, to me he is the luckiest guy alive and he had a moment that will be with him forever. He played FOR Prince! What an incredible experience for him. (I envy him, myself) But I have to thank God for answering my prayers for the second time now. I wished for a show on my birthday, and he showed up June 1, 1998 and a month ago I was telling a friend how much I would love to see Prince perform at The Murat here in Indy, and here he came! I am only saddened by the fact that it's all over now. It didn't last near long enough. The music was fabulous, but what else would you expect from such a talented and diverse artist. I can only hope that one day I will get to meet Prince so that I may tell him how much his music has touched me and how much I respect him for being "Himself" instead of what everyone else might want. Freedom to the people and Freedom to the music!
Peace 2 U Prince R. Nelson and to your loyal and true fams....

from Ricki

Let me start first by saying God Bless U all. Now for the review. This show was everything I expected and more. I stood outside of the theater when I saw all of the tour buses parked outside. I waited and waited and finally, Prince's bus pulls up. He stepped off and smiled as he walked in2 the stage entrance. I went 2 the sound check with my wife and Prince gave us all a mini concert right there. He talked 2 us all and was real cool and down 2 earth. Then this man asks Prince if he can play with him. Prince let's him onstage and hands him his guitar! They start playing "The Christ" and the rest of the band joined in and everyone was having fun. Then I asked Prince if I could sing a song with him. He says "What do u want 2 sing?" I said "Whatever u play is cool with me!" He suggests "Oops, I did it again" and everybody started laughing. I told him that I don't do Brittney! I wanted 2 sing "Adore", but Prince said he wasn't singing no love ballads with another man onstage! I think he was afraid that I was gonna tear it up! (Ebonics translation: "tear it up" = "do a really good job"). I did get 2 meet Billy Sparks, Prince's friend from way back. He gave me some advice on getting my music heard. Anyway, the actual concert was hype! The band was so tight! I don't think Indianapolis was ready for the funk that went down last night. I mean, this was definitely 4 true music lovers. The musicianship is just on another level! He performed about half of the songs from The Rainbow Children, then he asked us about our local radio stations. He wanted 2 know if we liked the music being played on the radio stations today. Everyone booed and said "no!" So Prince introduced us to WNPG radio, and started jamming "Strange Relationship". I wanted 2 jump on stage so bad and start singing it, but I was sitting too far black...:) (inside joke) He played some other old school favorites like "When U Were Mine" and "Love Rollercoaster" by the Ohio Players. After that set, Prince came back out and jumped on the keyboard and started 2 sing "Adore". The crowd almost lost it! He went on to sing "The Beautiful Ones", "Purple Rain", "Free", and "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore". (I may have missed a song or 2....) The band went on 2 play some other favorites like "Starfish and Coffee", and "Raspberry Beret". I really like how he ened the show, though. He ended the show in the only way he possibly could.....by leaving God on our minds. So the only way 2 end this emale reply is in the same way. Love life, Love God, LoveOneAnother. Let's all continue 2 Praise God.....our creator, our savior. And let's continue 2 support artists who recognizes and gives God the glory he so rightfully deserves. God Bless.

As for the concert, you just have to experience it for yourselves. Like Prince said, "If you came to get your Purple Rain on, you're in the wrong place." This tour is about music... the old and the new. If Prince is anywhere near your town, trust me, it's worth the money to go see him. He's a living legend and still on top of his game. See him while you can, because you never know when he's going to retreat again.

Now I have a confession to make. This was my seventh Prince concert since first seeing him in 1997, although I've been into his music since the beginning. But this was my first time experiencing a Prince concert on a natural high, and not off the sticky-icky and/or liquor. You know what was a trip to see? Hundreds, maybe thousands of intoxicated people singing, "Love is God. God is Love. Girls and boys love God above." Just the whole spiritual experience tripped me out. But who am I to judge? For the past six shows I was the same way. We all have different paths that leads us closer to God, and last night taught me that experiencing Prince on a natural high is the way to go. I remember everything, and I still partied like it was 2999. What kind of vibe would exist if everyone experienced Prince on a natural high? I'm sure it would make Prince happy, but more importantly it would make God happy. Besides, Prince gon' get you high again!!!

from Matt

Over the past five years, I've made some long trips to see Prince perform, including a few 11 or 12 hour drives to Minneapolis. By contrast, I only had to walk two blocks from my office to attend Prince's concert here in downtown Indianapolis.

After being admitted and given our NPG Music Club laminates (ID checks were in effect to keep out "free riders"), we were led into the theater for the soundcheck. When he came out, Prince mentioned that he had just finished a meeting with his staff to discuss solutions to the ticket scalping problem.

The highlight of the soundcheck was when Prince brought up an audience member (whose name escapes me right now--sorry, I'm terrible with names!) who wanted to sit in on guitar with the band for "The Christ." It was an admirable performance, and Prince commented that he'd done the best job of any audience musician so far on this tour.

At the end of the soundcheck, Prince asked us to suggest a good place to play an aftershow. Several people, including myself, recommended the Slippery Noodle Inn, which prompted Prince to joke that he couldn't play at a place with a name like that. He asked Takumi to give the Slippery Noodle a call (although the aftershow actually took place at a bar called Birdy's--more on that later).

I'll let other people handle the details of the concert--I will say, though, that "Strange Relationship" and "1+1+1 is 3"/"Love Rollercoaster" were among the highlights for me. Thanks to a generous fan (rainbowray) in North Carolina who sold me a front row ticket at face value, I had a great view of the show.

At the end of the concert, an aftershow at Birdy's Bar and Grill was announced. After quickly consulting the phone book to get the address, I jumped in my car and headed for the north side of town.

Thanks to my NPGMC laminate, I was able to attend the 70 minue aftershow for free. (Membership has its privileges, right?) Here's my best attempt at a setlist, quickly scribbled in my car after the aftershow:

- Atomic Dog
- Touch [not sure on the title; Prince included a few lines from Stevie Wonder's "I Wish"]
- The Ride
- Calhoun Square
- Paisley Park
- Oye Como Va / Soul Sacrifice

As far as I know, this was the first aftershow that Prince has ever played in Indianapolis. It was a great performance, with plenty of improvisation. At one point Prince confirmed that this year's Celebration is slated on begin on June 21st.

In sum, it was a fun evening with plenty of good music. I'm looking forward to this year's Celebration.
